Thursday, 31 March 2005

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, (NAMC) – A stirring tribute concert to the late George Harrison was named best of show at the first-ever Music DVD Awards, presented last night in Century City, Calif.

“Concert for George,” released by Warner Strategic Marketing, was among seven music DVDs honored at the awards, established by Home Media Retailing magazine to recognize achievements in the fast-growing music DVD market.

Other winners, selected by a panel of critics from Home Media Retailing, USA Today and other publications:
—Best Concert Video “Live Aid,” Warner Strategic Marketing
—Best Compilation ” Director’s Label Box Set,” Palm Pictures
—Best Documentary ” Dig!,” Palm Pictures
—Best Music Feature “The Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus,” Abkco Records/Blink Digital
—Best Special Features/Bonus Materials “Ramones: Raw,” Image Entertainment
—Best Catalog Title “The Who: The Kids Are Alright,” Geneon Entertainment

The winners were chosen from more than 130 entries submitted by the record companies and music DVD distributors. All titles released in calendar 2004 were eligible, except for best catalog, for which any music DVD released since the DVD format’s birth in March 1997 could be considered.

The Music DVD Awards were part of the inaugural Music DVD Conference, produced by Home Media Retailing in cooperation with DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, The Hollywood Reporter and the Video Software Dealers Association. The conference attracted more than 250 attendees, including top executives with the major record labels and key independent record companies, major music retailers from around the country, key members of the music press and other industry leaders.

The event also included a keynote address from Tommy Ramone, the co-founder and only surviving original member of seminal American punk band The Ramones, and a performance by LaToya London, the Peak/Concords recording artist who captivated audiences throughout the country with her soulful performances on the 2004 season of “American Idol.”

Home Media Retailing is the leading business-to-business publication serving the home entertainment market. The weekly tabloid is published by Advanstar Communications.
