Blues fest beefs up lineup with Guy, Taylor, Staples, Mayall
March 25, 2005
The Chicago Blues Festival, which has been sorely lacking in star power in recent years, has announced a schedule for 2005 that offers an intriguing nightly mainstage lineup.
The 22nd annual event, billed as the largest free blues festival in the world, will take place June 9-12 at the Petrillo Music Shell and several auxiliary stages in Grant Park.
The lineup is particularly heavy on established stars on the local blues scene. Nightly headliners include the Queen of the Blues, Koko Taylor, and Her Blues Machine on Friday; Chicago blues kingpin and new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Buddy Guy on Saturday, and soul-gospel legend Mavis Staples bringing down the curtain on Sunday.
British blues is well represented, as well, with Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers"-era guitarist Mick Taylor joining his old boss John Mayall and Mayall's Bluesbreakers for Thursday's opening-night show closers. Another seminal name in British blues-rock, Kim Simmonds, will front a version of Savoy Brown for a 40th anniversary celebration that also includes Foghat's Rod Price and onetime Savoy Brown member Bob Hall.
Preceding Koko Taylor's set on Friday, the traditional Chicago night at the fest, will be an all-star assemblage of Muddy Waters sidemen, including Hubert Sumlin, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Mookie Brill.

there was a blurb about it in the Sun Times the other day, but truth be known clerk, if we want the scoops, we need to gather it from those "in the know" such as Doug, Gazza, oldkr, Voodoo, Jaxx, etc
information also available on the Lotus Couch, www.maxlugar.com |

That will be super my dearest voodoo pug
BTW, some years ago, I think in 2002 my friend brought 100% pure Chicago Blues for a festival here, it was the Chicago Blues festival. I made interviews to Magic Slim, Melvin Taylor and Big Time Sarah she know how to put her mojo working baby
Melvin Taylor made also a free gig at El Chopo, his bass player (5 string bass) kicked serious ass. I asked to play Voodoo Child (slight Return) as he recorded and released a great studio version... he just laughed and did NOT play it

A silly detail, some info and a mild request:
-Mayall/Taylor are actually closing the first night of the festival. Subsequent days feature Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, etc. I think Koko Taylor closes the whole festival. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see Koko and Mick Taylor (presumably no relation to Melvin Taylor as well) play together.
-Neither Mayall nor Taylor has actually confirmed the info in this Sun Times article.
-Voodoo, still looking forward to your reprint of your interview with Mick Taylor (preferably in translation . . .)

Buddy's playing on Saturday...I have to see him again. It looks like I might be able to swing Thursday night as well.
Aren't you glad they've moved this event into June rather than soggy ol' May, lol.

I hadn't heard the lineup either and I live in Cook County. better go check my blues-l messages. you might also be able to find the info on the city of chicagee's website which I'm too tired right now to look for. just got home from seeing the best blues band in Chicago, Devil in a Woodpile. you can have your Melvin Taylor wankery... |

This Chicago appearance is now confirmed on Mayall's website. Canadian dates are listed as well, but Mick Taylor is not shown for those dates. |
