Ten Thousand Motels Just out of curiosity. I wonder if he could have "redeemed himself" had he lived longer. I know he wasn't a musical genius or anything like that, but I'm not sure that he's been treated fairly. Some of his stuff was okay for the time and circumstance that he found himself in. I do think that releasing "Garden Party" was a mistake though. Not necessarily because it was a bad song, but some things are just better left unsaid.

Bloozehound I dig Ricky Nelson

He hits the spot when I'm in the mood for something light.

travelin' man
garden party
it's late
poor little fool
lonesome town

Good catchy shit!

Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't he in the process making some big "comeback" when he died.

Just out of curiousity, what's the story behind "garden party" and why should he not of released it? I don't think I'm aware of this story.

glencar "garden Party" was a bittersweet song about how he played an oldies show at MSG & the people there expected oldies. Ricky wanted to play some new stuff which didn't go over too well. It's a good song.

Bloozehound

Garden party was the song that sold me on Ricky Nelson.

Wasn't that long ago either.

I heard it and imediately made a mental note to get some of his stuff.

All I could find was a few compilations "best of" type albums.

Once I got them I realized he had sung all these other oldies that I liked, but had never knew who sung them or realized even they were all by the same guy lol

Ten Thousand Motels Garden Party Lyrics

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same

CHORUS
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

People came from miles around, everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air
'n' over in the corner, much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise

CHORUS

lott-in-dah-dah-dah, lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came
No one heard the music, we didn't look the same
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me
When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave

CHORUS

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode
Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should
If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck
But if memories were all I sang, I rather drive a truck

CHORUS

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
lot-in-dah-dah-dah

'n' it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

Bloozehound ahh ok, i see

It's about a concert at Madison Square Garden.

I never really studied up on Rick or his lyrics. I always thought the song was a reference to a dream, the way he referenced all those music legends was his way of paying tribute to them or something.

It seems kinda fantasy or dream-esque to have all those music legends at one gathering, but some of them were actually there.

It's definately one of his coolest songs, i'm glad he released it. I love it's laid-back, country feel(that steel guitar lick rules).

Cool!

Thanks for the heads-up

polksalad69 He was before my time. Tried to dig him because of James Burton but I just can't. I was in high school when he died.

Chuck I thought it was because the hippie audience at the MSG show didn't want to hear 'country' music.

I think that was a good part of it. Ricky Nelson was NOT cool after the "British Invasion/San-Fran-California band-Woodstock" cosmic convergence of the late 60's and early 70's. Even Elvis had a hard time regrouping after that little solar flare. LOL.
