Ten Thousand Motels I've got it narrowed down to 5 I think. Not necessarily in any order.

Dylan
Keith
Bogie
Kerouac
Errol Flynn

Honorable Mention

Kesey
Elvis
Hank Williams
James Dean

Uhhh,TTM Johnny Cash has a little message for you below for not including him on your list.

C'mon anybody that writes a lyric like,"I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die" is pretty damned cool!

He's right up there with Keef in my book.

Well ...in my own defense I don't think of Johnny Cash as as cool or iconic. I don't think Cash wanted to "be cool", or at least the best part of him. Cash is one step above cool....an Enigma. Dylan, Kerouac, Keith and Bogie on the other hand I think have/had an inner desire to "be cool."

Dick Bush Really cool guys are the ones who created their own worlds but remained quite down to earth. They are grateful for the gift of fate they got and keep being modest, they like the mortal humans very much and despise every kind of snobbery and superficiality. It is not the behaving, attitude or whatsoever making one cool - it is only the output that makes the Mr. Average Richards into the coolest Keef. Just imagine him without his music.

Ludwig, Frédéric, Miles, Albert, Johannes, Wolfgang, last but never least Jimi - they come immediately into my mind when thinking of cool.

No way for actors to come into my list. They just act.

MrPleasant Q: Do People like Miles Davis know about you and your music?

Frank Zappa: Well, I met Miles Davis in 1962 in a jazz club in San Francisco called the Black Hawk. I really liked his music and I went up to him and introduced myself to him and he turned his back on me. And so I haven't had anything to do with him or his music since that time.

Q: In 1962, though, you hadn't recorded anything.

Zappa: That's okay. He had his chance. I don't treat people that way.

Highwire Rob I've always believed this guy belongs on a Defining Image of Cool list. Throw in suave, debonair, and damn great script writer. Isn't it interesting how a lot of these suggestions look cool in black & white?

However, it is absolutely not cool to smoke.

Check out a very brief but informative bio at:

Ten Thousand Motels Dire Straits - The Bug Lyrics

well it's a strange old game - you learn it slow
one step forward and it's back to go
you're standing on the throttle
you're standing on the breaks
in the groove 'til you make a mistake

sometimes you're the windshield
sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
sometimes you're the louisville slugger
sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

you gotta know happy - you gotta know glad
because you're gonna know lonely
and you're gonna know bad
when you're rippin' and a ridin'
and you're coming on strong
you start slippin' and slidin'
and it all goes wrong because

sometimes you're the windshield
sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
sometimes you're the louisville slugger baby
sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

one day you got the glory
one day you got none
one day you're a diamond
and then you're a stone
everything can change
in the blink of an eye
so let the good times roll
before we say goodbye, because

sometimes you're the windshield
sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
sometimes you're the louisville slugger baby
sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

Sir Stonesalot Wait a minute.

I know some of you fuckers that are yappin' in this thread...how the hell would you know who is "cool". You ain't cool yerselves, so how the fuck can you claim that someone else is cool?!? You know, if you actually knew what cool was, then you'd be cool yerself, right? So if you ain't cool, then you don't know what cool is...and you sure as shit can't claim that someone else is cool, since you have no idea what cool is!

Really, on this board there's only like...4 or 5 people who would know what cool is. Myself, of course, being one of them.

And since I know that it is way uncool to be pointing the cool finger at famous people...I will refrain from doing it. That is how cool I am.

In the meantime, here is THIS!

OK. So who's your role model? Some famous people are cool because they actually define cool. Like the guys I've mentioned.

Buddy,

You'd better get some acustic guitar - it has a hole, if you know what I mean.

Not a bad thing for a handsome guy like you

FPM C10

No matter what your definition...

25th March 2006 10:03 PM
FPM C10 Kerouac was only cool for awhile.

When he was a confused old right-wing drunk who lived with his mom, he was less so.

PeerQueer You best put Dino and Francis S. on that list!

Dino defined detached cool and did it better than most.

And Sinatra? Forget about it -cool motherfucka!

Pre-Army Elvis was one cool dude as well.

Of course, one of the coolest dudes I know today is my uncle. I call him the Carmel King - and he always reminds me it's Clint's place. At nearly 70 years of age, he's top-tier cool. The guy oozes class and has women half his age giving him the eyes all the time, yet he politely remains absolutely loyal to my aunt - now that is as cool as it gets kids!
