Topic: Stones Too Serious. Return to archive

Make It Funky Can I ask what the hell has happened to the individual members and collective members of the Rolling Stones??

As far as Im concerned, they just seem so lazy and disenchanted with their careers. They've lost the passion. And they've lost that witty sense of humour they used to have (to which I loved about them so much).

What happened to all those tongue-in-cheek songs?? I think Keith had the last two, with "Theif in the Night" and "You dont have to mean it"... but..

Why can't they come out with an album title that is like Some Girls? Or Tattoo You? Sticky Fingers? Catchy "fuck you" titles..

I think that they just take themselves too seriously. Despite the utterly hillarious interviews they do, and the "image" that they want you to see.. and I realize that in-concert, they unbelievably hysterical...

But I really think they need to lighten the fuck up and shed some of their humour into their music and up coming album title. The whole "licks" thing was too contrived for me... and that porno-tongue thing with the girl riding it was just a little too predictable.. I am not asking for an inflatable penis.. nor a Yellow blimp... Somethign that signifies who the Rolling STones really are. A cheeky band who doesnt give a flyin' fig. Are they too concerned about upsetting the consumers? The would-be newbies? do they really need to? Lets have somethin dirty and naughty. Whaddya say??

Cheers.

Where have you been? The whole Licks thing was a throwback to the days of old.

The title, Club-Shows, Not really a theme to the tour but rather just a hot Rolling Stones tour without a motif. A sparse stage.

Voodoo Lounge was also a fun-time album. But it was definately a theme tour.

AS The Stones have evolved a little. And as it is not the 70's anymore, The Stones have gave a little intelligence to their studio release titles. But only at times....look at "No-Security" or "Stripped", or "40 Licks", how mature and deep is that?

As for Dirty/toungue and cheek titles for albums. Well those have been really "out", so to speak, for a long long time now. This is why The Stones, or anyone doesn't really use them these days.

Jumping Jack "Something that signifies who the Rolling Stones really are."

How about a bank vault loaded with dollars and the boys stuffing themselves to excess. They could wear their Beggars costumes to make it look retro.

Greed seems to be their biggest vice today.

Carol Sigmaringa I don't know, I'm just wondering...
People change, they're not the same anymore. They're older and lived so many things that can't happen again. If it did, we could say they were stuck in the time.
I think it would be idiot if they pretend that nothing has changed in so many years.
I'm not telling that because they're older, they can't do something new, but I like what they've been doing. I just think that maybe, as the years passing by, people get more serious. And I think they are, but still good. Just in another phase of their life.
We really have the tendency to celebreate youth, it's human..but we have to accept that it's not forever.
The good thing is that we have the memories (and videos)of the great years of youth when everything was new and fresh.

Hope anyone get me wrong

My Dearest Stones Brothers & Sisters have been raising some very interesting ( ... and serious ) points here on this thread .

I believe it was Plato who once brayed : " To become certifiably serious is the unadulterated curse of all humankind . " ( 1988 , March 5th )

That being said ..... as we get older we DO tend to become more serious , yet one's moral turpitude need not permeate the vapors of our existence whilst ............................

FPM C10 Plato? PLATO???

Plato was a third-rate hack.

I liken Plato to my idiot brother-in-law who fancies himself an auto mechanic...He once claimed to have diagnosed a problem I was having with an old BMW with which I refused to part...he tore apart the engine all along swearing he could fix it and that he knew what the problem was...all the while telling me what was wrong with it...that was six years ago...the parts still take up half my garage, the car is not fixed, and my brother-in-law went to Germany and has not returned...What a turd.

Or wait...are we talking about Dana Plato?

MrPleasant The Stones? Serious??

Just look at that header. (From what day? From this day, of course.)
March 18th, 2005 02:35 AM
Make It Funky Yes, well I don't mean on the personal level, because, evidently, they are the eternal hooligan band.. just a bunch of tarts at the end of the day... but I think it has to do with the "greed" and "money" factor. hm..

Yes, they are old.. and if so.. then.. does this not beg the question, if they don't have the spark anymore.. then, pack it in!

I guess that I am coming from the perspective of that I hear new artists, like Kings of Leon, who have much much better songs out now, and can write damn better tunes than the Stones have in the recent years.

I'm not dismissing the fact taht they can still do it.. for I hear it every time they play Midnight Rambler, Tumbling Dice and Out of Control (no security). but why are these isolated, circumstantial songs??

I want the magic back. I want the spirit in the dark. I want that evil, dirty naughtiness to return into their artistic collaboratoin and musical delivery.

Thanks for your input. I love the Stones. Im quite partial to them. I just want some of the passion back with less paranoia.

Cheers all.

Ten Thousand Motels FPM....in your avatar....Is that supposed to be a crown on W's head or a Bart Simpson haircut?
March 19th, 2005 09:26 AM
exile I can relate to what you are saying "evil, dirty naughtiness " eg. the humour that comes through on some girls etc. there has not been as much of it.

What about "Jump on top of me Babe" or "Sex Drive"
both recent songs...the lyrics to "Dont Stop" are fairly funny.

Steel Wheels God damned horse shit to think the Stones are too serious. I saw a handfull of shows on the recent go-round. It was the first time I've ever turned around during a show to look at the crowds - nothing but big smiles, BIG smiles for the Stones.

Mick danced and pranced and kept the energy so high. Check out Love Train on 4 Flicks for evidence. Check out Miss Crowe and the Stones doing Honey Tonk Woman. Don't forget Midnight Rambler.

They are a bunch of looning old men with crazy hair, crooked teeth, gaudy jewels, and goofy shoes. They got nasty habits and they take tea at three. They have super sized egos. I wouldn't have 'em any other way.

I try not to dwell on the negative. (the lack of studio output, the fact Keef doesn't return my calls...) Life's too short and the Stones are such a huge part of my my own that I'd rather not tear down my idols.
