Flu-shy Stones still coming here
Published on Mar 28, 2003
Good news for Rolling Stones fans in Thailand: though the British rock band has cancelled two concerts in Hong Kong, their April 8 concert in Bangkok will proceed as planned.
"My boss (managing director Brian Marcar) just received an e-mail this morning, confirming the concert," a PR officer at BEC Tero Entertainment said yesterday.
"It's unlikely that the concert in Bangkok would be cancelled given that we have no [SARS] disease and have witnessed no impact from the ongoing war in Iraq."
BEC Tero, one of the sponsors, originally planned a media trip to Hong Kong but later cancelled it due to the mysterious, highly infectious pneumonia outbreak.
Yesterday, the Rolling Stones became the highest-profile visitors yet to postpone a trip to Hong Kong.
The rock legends cancelled two concerts in Hong Kong, scheduled for March 28 and 29, as a result of the warnings on SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) from the Hong Kong government and the World Health Organisation.
Increases in the number of cases of SARS in Hong Kong and southern China and continued concern over large gatherings have created apprehension among fans and concern for their safety.
Following the cancellation, the Rolling Stones plan to reschedule the concerts as soon as possible.
No new dates have been set for the concerts and Hong Kong fans can obtain refunds.
