Parade Car Hits Pedestrians in Savannah

Wednesday, March 17, 2004

SAVANNAH, Ga. A convertible struck several pedestrians at the city's St. Patrick's Day parade (search) Wednesday after the vehicle accelerated through an intersection.

Witnesses said six or seven people were hit and taken by ambulance to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The car, which was in the parade, struck the pedestrians at Bull and State streets near the center of downtown Savannah (search), Police Capt. Larry Brainson said.

The car was supposed to turn right along the parade route but instead accelerated through the intersection, running into Wright Square (search) where dozens of people had gathered to watch the parade.

"People were diving out of the way," said Jeff Gronner of Savannah. "It's a miracle that more people weren't hit."

Gronner said people were screaming as the car raced toward them. He estimated the car was traveling at about 30 mph.

The accident happened about midway through the parade, which is the nation's second largest St. Patrick's Day parade.

jb First They Came for the Jews
------------------------------
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Gazza The version of that great poem that I'm familiar with includes a line that goes "then they came for the lawyers.."

You have been rather funny lately....my posts seem to bring the best out of you(i.e."Passion Soundtrack").

Gazza Well,I'm pleased you take it in the spirit its intended.

Glad you finally commented on that one. I was quite pleased with that myself. Even though I had to look up a book ("The Bible Code") to find out what year "2000" was in the Jewish calendar so I could lampoon "2000 Man".
