Topic: Things Believed as a Republican Return to archive
03-10-04 05:51 AM
kahoosier As a youth I really thought of myself as a liberal. As my income increased I found myself becoming more and more of a Republican, and a conservative. I am happy that Saddam was removed and his reign of terror is ended. But as a man that lives in a U.S. trust Territory on the other side of the Dateline from the mainland, I am exposed to a lot of international thinking and opinions, and it is getting scarey. Then, as I was reading comments on the Howard Stern thread, whom I have never liked, I found myself being a bit stunned by supporters of the FCC and the idea of the "public airwaves". Were these Stones fans? If so, in retrospect, do they feel that ED Sullivan was right in making Mick change the Lryics to Let's Spend the Night Together for what was then the level of decency at that time. Where does it stop?

And as I thought about it all, I opened an e-mail (truely one of the great coincedences in life) that contained the following, and I may have to Look at Kerry:

THINGS BELIEVED AS A REPUBLICAN

1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless
you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need
our prayers for your recovery.

2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and
our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against
Iraq.

3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big
Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve
the pain of illness.

4. "Standing Tall" for America means firing your workers and
moving their jobs to India.

5. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body,
but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all
mankind without regulation.

6. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and
Hillary Clinton.

7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the
troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat
pay.

8. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you someday
run for governor of California as a Republican.

9. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have
sex.

10. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time
allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

11. HMOs and insurance companies have the interest of the
public at heart.

12. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy.
Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

13. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk
science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

14. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when
Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business
with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden"
diversion.

15. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an
impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war
in which thousands die is solid defense policy

16. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the
Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the
Internet.

17. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle
trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.

18. You support states rights, which mean Attorney General John
Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have a
right to adopt.

19. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national
interest, but what Bush did in the 1980s is irrelevant.

20. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist,
but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of
international harmony.

Jumping Jack Another thing believed by Republicans is that at least 50 cents of every tax dollar is wasted and the government bureaucrats and middlemen are not the solution to most social problems, personal accountibilty is.

Word to both parties, rather than raising taxes and spending to buy votes start working a little harder to eliminate the pork and waste.
03-10-04 09:38 AM
Sir Stonesalot I agree with all of that Kahoosier. But I'm sure that the Republicans can make up a list that looks just like that about the Dems too.

What has happened is that both of our major political parties, and for that matter, our government, have lost sight of is one very important thing...that they are to serve the best interests of the American people. The parties only focus on consolidating power for themselves. It's not about serving the American people, it's about beating the other party. They figure that they can always just spin it into sounding like something the people might buy into, regardless if it serves the people or not.

Government agencies do nothing more than serve the master who is currently in power. If they don't, then they gotta go find a job because the master will appoint someone that WILL serve him. And finding a job ain't an easy thing anymore.

The people that I fell the worst for are the kids in my son's generation. By the time my kid hits the job market the country will be on the verge of sinking under the weight of trillions of dollars of public debt.

For sure. There are other political parties out there. I like the Libertarians myself for the most part. They even hold some positions I don't but thats ok. But I think people need to start looking for common ground with other people that don't necessarily think like they do before anything will change. We're becoming to "poisonously polarized" right now...."culture wars" and all that. We need to find some common ground, or else the "gamesman" in both parties always win.
03-10-04 01:35 PM
Poplar First of all, I am not a Republican. I am a conservative. Both parties, especially in their Washington form, make me sick. However, I support Bush, and Im going to defend him on a point or two here,

Ill just start with #4: "Standing Tall" for America means firing your workers and moving their jobs to India.

Kerrys line is always: "Benedict Arnold companies sending out jobs overseas."
uh... John, you voted for NAFTA, buddy. Or do you even remember? In fact, Kerry voted for a host of free trade agreements, the very strain of economic philosophy that leads to outsourcing. Above all, what does Kerry suggest we do about it? Answer: nothing can be done, and he damn well knows it. That is why neither he nor Edwards EVER proposed any kind of solution for it while talking endlessly about the problem. Outsourcing is a natural evolution in the world economy. Yes folks, it sucks. But what's the solution? Shall we penalize American companies for staying competitive in a changing global economy? No, of course we shouldnt. If you want to see some REAL job losses... start building up protectionist laws to appease (understandably) frustrated workers. Then theyll really be screwed. The Bush economist who called outsourcing a good thing has the burden of being 100% correct here. Its a big problem that has to be considered in the big picture. What if, at the dawn of the industrial revolution, workers said: WE WLL NOT HAVE OUR JOBS REPLACED BY MACHINES! Those workers would still be in the fields, earning lower wages and working longer hours than they ultimately did in the factories. Then, when factory conditions sucked, computers took the jobs. What of people said: WE WILL NOT HAVE OUR FACTOR JOBS REPLACED BY COMPUTERS! It would have been a very bad idea. Those computer jobs (though requiring more skill) became a higher paying source of employment for increasingly skilled workers. This is the natural evolution of things. Unfortunately, for many Americans, their jobs are now threatened by this evolution. But to look for short term solutions (for some cheap political capital) without thinking about the long term significance does nothing for the people Kerry says he wants to help. The solution it to offer incentives for Americans to keep jobs here, but you cannot force them to. Help get Americans better educated, so they get higher paying jobs. Then, developing nation will benefit form our success, taking some of the lower skilled jobs that many Americans dont want, or need. It will become a bit like the working Latino population in America; gladly supporting a labor role that America needs, but cannot necessarily account for.

2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and
our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against
Iraq.

I agree here, in part. It was wrong to use WMD as the reason for war. However, what were doing there is a good kick in the ass for the Middle East. This week, the people of Iraq approved one of the most progressive forms of government in the region. A central government, with regional control, guaranteed rights for women, and guaranteed freedom of religion in an Islamic state. God bless America, and our service men and women for allowing this happen. 20 years from now, when Iraq is a full TWO centuries ahead of those other, backward Middle East regimes, America (and yes, George W. Bush) will be credited with moving the Iraqi people into the 20/21stth century. Were there for geo-political reasons. WMD was an excuse. That was a mistake, and I hope it doesnt prevent people from seeing the world changing work we have done there. Ask anyone over there: 99% of Iraqis think their country is better off than before the war. 1% is fucking with us. Lets not let those psychos deter us from helping the country, and the region.

jb I have come to realize that neither party makes much of a difference;however, the judicial appointments made by a President have a tremendous impact that can last for decades.

Jumping Jack How many countries does Heinz have factories in? 57. How ironic is that? If Kerry wants to add American jobs maybe he should talk to momma.

Ketchup mixed with mayo and a little lemon juice makes a delicious "thousand islands" dressing suitable both as a salad dressing or sandwich spread.

You talk about crazy affairs
You talk about your life as though it mattered
You get attention 'cos you block the stairs
Bragging about some bottles you have shattered

Well I met a man who really lives
He really does it all
But what really matters is the heart he gives
He makes your talk seem small

When a man is a man
He doesn't act to a plan
He don't have to perform like John Wayne in some B feature flick
A man is a man
When he can offer his hand
Not afraid of appearing insane if he can't break a brick
I know a man who's a man

Can't you sometimes crack a smile
Do you think if you did we would run and tell
I know one day your big villian style
Will collapse as they turn the key in the door of your cell

I know a man who was once like you
But he opened his heart
No one is really bad right through
He's just another part

When a man is a man
And he drinks 'til he's canned
He can drop to the floor, he can weep, we won't ask the price
A man is a man
He can fall he can stand
We won't love him more if he keeps his soul on the ice
I know a man who's a man

Every one of us is looking for fame
He's a looker
He's a dresser
He's a genius under pressure
I know a man who could tighten your rein
He's a father
He's a brother
He's a rock
He's a lover

He's a man he's a man
He doesn't act to a plan
He don't have to get hitched to a train in some muscle beach trick
A man is a man
When he can offer his hand
Not afraid of apprearing insane if he can't break a brick
Be a man who's a man

Sir Stonesalot Look, I let it slide when the Stones shared the same stage as Bill Clinton.

I let it slide when Mick became Sir Michael.

I let it slide when they let Justin Timberlake "sing" with them.

However, I guarantee that if they share a stage with Bush Jr., I will never give them another dollar of my money. I will pack all my Stones stuff up into many many boxes and they will get stuffed away up in the attic, never to see the light of day again. You would no longer see me at Rocks Off. In a word...I would disown the Rolling Stones.

Just remember Rooster...your perfect world could be someone else's hell on earth.
