Sir Stonesalot I'm reading a book on the history of bootlegs. It's pretty interesting stuff. If you like boots, you'll probably want to read this at sometime or other....If you are a hardcore collector, you MUST read this.

Bootleg
The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry
By Clinton Heylin
St. Martin's Press

You can get it new or used cheap here:

Sir Stonesalot Is it the Lemon Records version, or the K & S knock off?

Uh, yeah? What?

Break The Spell Does this book have lists of actual bootlegs by famous bands, or is it mainly just a history of bootlegs??
23rd March 2006 03:31 PM
Sir Stonesalot No, this is not a discography. It is a well researched history, complete with interviews of people who were involved with the production of the bootlegs. It also delves into some of the gray areas of both domestic and international copyright laws.

For instance, he talks to Dub, the guy who recorded LiveR(and one half of the legendary TMQ records). He goes into detail about the equipment he used, his positioning, how he got it mastered and pressed so fast...really very interesting. He explains how he got the master recordings for Bright Lights, Big City...just tons of fascinating stuff like that.

Now, I suppose if you want to go through the book and compile a list of the titles that he mentions, you will probably end up with a couple hundred titles...but anyone who has been collecting for more than a couple of weeks will probably already have most of it already.

Break The Spell Still it sounds like a great book, I was just curious if it had a discography section or anything of the like included. I used to be big into tape trading and bootlegs so I'm sure it will be a good read.

Sir Stonesalot You may want to look for old copies of Hot Wacks or Hot Wacks Quarterly...those mags had discographies, and reviews and ratings of new products.
23rd March 2006 03:45 PM
Break The Spell I used to get Hot Wacks back in the day, their discographies were pretty good, but I really enjoyed their reviews. It opened my eyes to many bootlegs I may not have even given a chance. I'll have to see if I still have any around.
