I really like GHS... I know a few who don't, but they're my friends despite that. |

It's a great fuckin' album, Silver Train, god I love that song! |

Awesome album. It grows on you. There is a general sameness to it but thats not a bad thing. It seems to have its own eerie kinda mood.
But never mind Angie and Heartbreaker. Star Star, Dancing with Mr D, 100 Years Ago, Winter, Coming Down Again. These are also great songs and of course Silver Train.
Hide Your Love and Can You Hear The Music are the only two IMHO that aren't brilliant but they are pretty good too.
Definitely one I'd take to the proverbial desert island.
Star Star and Respectable are my two favourite Stones songs to sing along to. Not a pretty sight. |

Well how about that Pdog. Something we agree on. While I admit GHS may not be the Stones strongest work, or, lord knows, not their most commercial. However it is my personal favorite. Deep, Murky, some what experimental and really digs deep to take the music to that next level. Totally different from all other albums (not that Stones albums all sound the same or have the same vibe, because they surely do not).

Bill Wyman hardly plays on GHS, it's mostly Taylor and Richards. If I remember correctly, Wyman only plays on Angie and Star Star.

Maybe thats why it sounds so good! Man, that guy had the easiest job in rock. Dont move on stage. Play on just a few tracks per album (especially from 69) and lay as many under age birds as you can.
And, still the asshole is bitter! |

Break The Spell |
Great album all around, Wyman, Richards and Taylor provide lots of great bass grooves all over, my favorites are on Dancing With Mr. D. and Heartbreaker. It would have been nice if "Criss Cross Mind" made this album.

This is one of those albums that have aged well on me...
The album has some weird sense of continuity to it...it's difinatley murky (exile like in that sense)- all the songs seemed to be washed in a heroin daze...It does have a kind of spooky aura to it - most likley due to Dancin' w/Mr. D & the Voodoo laced album design...but I think theres somthing else there? Definatley a lost classic as it followed Exile... |

a huge letdown after its predecessors....and their weakest effort of the 70's
that said, it means it gets an 'A-' rather than an 'A' or 'A+'
still better than just about most other bands' albums that decade |

I consider GHS one of the most underated albums of all-time - by any band.
great sound thru out. One of their most cohesive sounding records. Every time I listen to it I have a new found appreciation for this album. There are many songs on it that could easily stand up on any other Stones album - Winter, Heartbreaker, Coming Down, Silver Train, Angie...
Mick Taylor really shines on this one.
Winter is one of the finest songs in the Stones entire catalog.
Taylor's solo at the end of 100 Years Ago is just off the charts. The way he and Charlie are able to shift gears at the end of the track and just send the song rumbling down the track like an out of control locamotive is one of the coolest moments in any Stones song ever.
its a crime and a shame that the Stones have neglected so many of the great songs on this album in their live shows for so long. |

Ian
Hello Ian,
I really can't agree with that statement. I think it's very commercial and VERY 1973. It fitted in nicely with what other artists were doing at the time. Songs like Heartbreaker and 100 Years Ago are pretty damn commercial in my opinion and isn't Angie on this album? The song that epitomizes musical commercialism. Even people, who didn't usually like the Stones, bought that single.

Correct, and I also believe it was their second best selling album of the 70's, right behind "Some Girls". |

Egbert |
I wouldn't say GHS was more or less commercial than any other Stones albums up to that point. Angie certainly sounds commercial but "Star Star" pretty much cancels that out.
Great album - much better than the one that followed. |

My point wasn't that I thought Goats Head Soup was any more commercial than the others; I was just really going against Ian’s opinion that the record wasn't commercial at all.
I'd say the actual sound of Star Star is fairly commercial, it's just a glam style 70’s rocker. It's the LYRICS that aren’t!
