Topic: vinyl/record player help Return to archive

mrhipfl I was thinking some of you might be able to answer this question. I just got a record player from a yardsale along with some records. It has an audio cable so I can connect it to my stereo. It works fine, but the volume seems unusually low. Is it normal to have to turn the volume on the stereo all the way up in order to hear something? Or am I missing something like an extra amplifier? Thanks.

VoodooChileInWOnderl You must use the phono input in your amp, seems that the problem is that you're connecting the turntable to the AUX or other input. The "Phono" input is the only one who works with a record player otherwise in addition to the volume the sound will not be pure

CraigP Voodoochile may be correct but you may also need a phono pre-amp.
Some turntables require this. It's a little gray box which you plug the turntable outputs into one side and the outputs from the box into your amp/stereo.

Some receivers have a low powered phono input along with a higher powered one. If so, stick it in the low.

I have about six top-quality tables and about 7 receivers... Been fondling with audio equipment since about 5 years old.
