based on sales of the album due in part to it being the lead single and the lucrative Microsoft deal, i would suspect that Start me Up would be the most lucrative. Although this could be difficlut to maintain with the rate the pre-71 catalog is being hocked to tv commercials these days.

in terms of number of singles sold, yes, but in terms of dollars generated, I would have to still go with Start Me Up...Bill Gates paid a high price for that song!

GhostofBrianJones Satisfaction is the most lucrative song of the Rolling Stones.
When they have countdowns on the radio it is ALWAYS #1

19th Nervous Breakdown and Mother's Little Helper, are in there
somewhere. I was a teenager in the 1960's (grad HS in 1967)
and I can remember all of their songs coming out as if it were
yesterday.

those countdowns dont win you money or anything. When those singles were sold, the price was significantly lower than today's prices, or even those from the eighties. This isnt a question about which song sold the most copies or is the most popular it is based solely on the dollar dollar bill

- Microsoft paid a reported $8 million to use the song for its Windows '95 launch campaign.

If you use the actual version, the royalties go to the the actual performers since they own their own performances. If you use a cover version, you pay the copyright owner. For instance, if you used the actual version of Revolution by the Beatles, Lennon/McCartney would get the royalties. However, if a cover version of the song were used, the royalties would go to the copyright owner, in that case, Michael Jackson. At least for now until his mounting legal bills cause him to sell his rights to the Beatles catalogue.

no.

but the venue does - from msg on down to the cask & flagoon across the street from fenway...

ascap/bmi is who collects the royalties...

if you release a cover version of a tune - the songwriter gets the royalties, regardless of who sings it...
