This is kind off a spinoff from a couple other threads....like the difference between "rock" & "rock n rock". But who plays that "pure, unaduterated" Rock n Roll?
Chuck Berry?
Little Richard?
Stones?
Jerry Lee Lewis?
Mitch Ryder?
Elvis?
Or whoever?

Rock n' Roll to me is a product of the 50's.
Rock could be applied to anything that came after the 50's.
Maybe alot of rockers in spirit are channeling rock n' roll, but the music is different, a little heavier, little raunchier, little angrier.
How can you say Street Fighting Man or Jumping Jack Flash are the same beat & rhythm as anything done by...Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fat Domino, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis?

This is IMO
and it don't mean jack shit but...
I'd say to define one as simply a rock n roller they'd have to been doing it in the 50's.
Rock is a loose term applied to alot of the music that has come since then(particularly 60's-70's) & rocks to a certain extent.
It's not pop, psychadelica, glam, metal or punk or thrash or any of that. Just basic rock based on basic rock n' roll principals.
Today the Stones are just as much rock n' rollers, as they are rockers. Just like most their contemporaries are too.
I know what the Stones claim to be and what thay named thier mid 70's album/song but...over the coarse of time "rock" has come to be the label stuck on this type of artist, at least for my generation.
I think there seems to be generation gap and we accept this label & the old guys can't.

Do an artist search with just the following words....some are mispelled on purpose, see what the amg guys classify these artists/groups by.
queen, stones, zeplin, bowie, dors, dyln, zapa, The Beatle, pop (as in iggy pop), reed, clapton, morrison, halen, straits (as in Dire Straits), hendrix, Springsten
just to name a few.
Rock, hard rock, rock n' roll
Anyway u wanna slice it, it's all basically the same shit.

Wasn't it Keith that said: "anyone who goes out trying to out-rock Chuck Berry is wasting their time." I agree with him. Chuck gave us what i think of as Rock & Roll.

I cant understand this absurd obsession with genres and labels. Most are expressions dreamed up by American A&R people or other idiots involved in marketing who have litle interest in music. How come we managed to get by WITHOUT these made-up labels and buzzwords for about 40 years before everything got divided into these bizarre genres and sub-genres. AMG might provide a good guide to discographies but spare me the labelling.Its getting to the stage where in a few years every act in the world will have their OWN unique genre. You can call any style of music what you like. Who's to prove you're wrong anyway?
I've always maintained that theres only TWO types of music anyway. Good or bad.
