Legendary guitarist Sumlin headlines Ice River Festival

So how good of a musician would you have to be to have Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Bob Margolin all appear on your CD? Better than good, according to Dave Ferris of Howling Dog Productions, which is bringing famed guitarist Hubert Sumlin to Owego for one night only as the headliner for this weekend's Ice River Blues Festival.

"The word 'legendary' is thrown out there all the time," Ferris said. "But in this case, it is absolutely the truth."

Sumlin got his start at the side of no less a bluesman than Howlin' Wolf and went on to leave a permanent stamp of greatness on the world of blues. The aforementioned CD, About Them Shoes, is Sumlin's critically acclaimed most recent recording, released in 2003.

But if the chance to see a guitar legend isn't enough, the Ice River Blues Fest is teaming up with Teleman Vintage Guitars to present the Ice River Vintage Guitar Show, which will coincide with the Festival.

"This is a beautiful marriage of doing the guitar show with this concert," Ferris said. "They approached us and asked if they could piggyback on our show. There will be people playing and demonstrating; everything and everybody is going to be there."

The guitar show is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Owego Treadway Inn. Admission is $6.

Sumlin will take the stage at the Treadway at 8 p.m. Saturday. Advance tickets at $17.50 are available at The Jailhouse Restaurant in Owego (687-9811) or at the Owego Treadway (687-4500). Tickets are $20 on the day of the show.

Ferris said the guitar show is a first for the region and will bring together dealers from New York, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas to display, buy, sell and trade guitars, amps and effects. The concert will be the icing on the cake.

"If you are a guitarist, you can't miss this," he said. "It's going to be pretty wild."

Break The Spell "About Them Shoes" is a great CD. I have to work on that Saturday, too bad I can't make that show. Sounds like it will be amazing.
