THE Rolling Stones were on a high when they arrived in Brisbane in 1973, with classic albums such as Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street establishing them as the world's leading rock band.

But they didn't count on the fickle Brisbane summer weather on the night of their February 14 concert.

"More than 8000 fans braved squalls last night to attend an hour-and-a-quarter concert by the Rolling Stones at Milton tennis courts," The Courier-Mail reported the next day.

"When Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones leader, strutted on to the stage wearing a purple sequined jump suit, the crowd went wild and the sea of umbrellas disappeared.

"The rain eased off as Jagger swaggered across the stage, gyrating and singing.

"Towards the end of the performance, when Jagger had zippered down his jump suit to his navel, hundreds of fans moved on to the centre court and stage area to dance.

"During their performance, members of the band swigged from beer cans or bottles."

In a separate report, The Courier-Mail's reviewer Jan McDonald said the wet conditions led to a disappointing performance.

"The amplifier of bass guitarist Bill Wyman and the microphone of Mick Jagger failed in patches.

"Sound engineers ignored trumpeter Jim Price and saxophonist Bobby Keys. They allowed them to be drowned out by heavy, brilliant guitar riffs from Mick Taylor and Keith Richards, at full amplification.

"The Stones rocked through many of their crowd pleasers: Brown Sugar, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Love in Vain and Rocks Off, but did not really warm up until they performed Midnight Rambler."

For the band's Australian fans, it would also be the last Rolling Stones tour Down Under until 1995, when the band returned to Brisbane to play QEII Stadium.
