vampire I don't know if it's exactly new but I'm reading just now here in Brazil that chinese gov has censored four Stones songs: Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Woman, Beast of Burden and Let's Spend the Nigth Together, "by its sexual lyrics content" can not be played in that country next april..

Is anyone surprised?

I hope they can find all the Stones songs with 0 "sexual lyrics content". Well, maybe playing China will have proved to be a mistake...but hell...taking risks is what life's all about.

telecaster Well that John Ashcroft has gone too far! This will not stand I tell you!

Stones tour censored in China
Wednesday, March 12, 2003 Posted: 4:10 AM EST (0910 GMT)

The songs are banned because they include sexual references.

BEIJING, China (AP) -- The Chinese government has ordered the Rolling Stones to ax four of their best-known hits from their landmark mainland shows next month, a concert organizer has said Wednesday.

The band, which is scheduled to perform in Shanghai April 1 and in Beijing April 4, will not be allowed to play "Brown Sugar," "Honky Tonk Woman," "Beast of Burden," or "Let's Spend the Night Together," Chen Jixin head of Beijing Time New Century Entertainment, a concert organizer behind the two China dates, said Wednesday.

The four songs, all of which include sexual references, were originally cut from the mainland release of the band's "40 Licks" compilation album by China's culture ministry, Chen said.

"Brown Sugar" refers to an interracial coupling. The album was released by EMI Records China earlier this year.

It was the first Rolling Stones album to legally hit the China market; pirated Stones' CDs are widely available in Shanghai and Beijing. Chen said she didn't know why the government had banned the four songs.

Mick Jagger has already had to change his words to satisfy censors.
The Chinese Ministry of Culture said no one was immediately available for comment. Only songs on the officially released "40 Licks" album will be allowed during the China shows, Chen said.

The mainland set changes will not be the first time the Stones have run afoul of censors. In 1967, the Rolling Stones appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in the United States to sing "Let's Spend The Night Together."

To satisfy censors, Mick Jagger sang "Let's spend some time together."

When asked about the Beijing and Shanghai performance dates in Tokyo last week guitarist Keith Richards said: "It's about time they let us in."

The band first applied to perform in China in the 1970s and was refused permission.

LadyJane I should think they'd be more concerned about "Street Fighting Man"!! Especially since the opening act's tunes became the anthem of the Tienamen (sp?) Square protestors!

03-12-03 01:48 PM
KeepRigid They should oblige and replace the four songs with:

I Just Want To Make Love To You
I'm Going Down
Sex Drive
Jump On Top of Me

(Keith should, of course, do Little T&A.)

The government would be happy, the fans would be treated.

Win-Win.

Martha i just got this e-mail from a friend and fellow Stones fan who I met at the Rock Hall after the Stones gig in Cleveland last October..read on and get your rocks off...
------------------------------------------------------
Dear Martha,

The funny thing is (2) of my friends visited china last month and they said
it was a sex pit there. They said that at the bars there are girls who
aproach you (prostitutes) who will do ANYTHING for money. My friend said
he talked her down to $10 but decided not to go thru with the deal figuring
any girl who'll do something with him for $10 must be pretty scary in the
disease department. He also said that this isn't hush-hush either...it is
either legal or just ignored by the authorities. Also, most of these girls
were REALLY young. I'm talking 12 here. He also said that you can rent a
girl for the day to go to the beach with, do your laundry, whatever you
want I guess. He said he went to the beach and there was all kinds of
retired looking americans walking arm-in-arm with 16 year olds in small
bikinis. IT MUST BE THE PIRATED STONES CD'S THERE! That is the only
logical solution huh? Since 40 licks can't be heard with it's suggestive
lyrics included.

How funny is that?

Go figure ehhh?!

LOL! Nice one..

how about

(Mao) I Need you Baby

I must admit that I'm bewildered at the inclusion of "beast of Burden" of all songs. whats the supposed problem with that one? the "make love to me" line?

Little Red Rooster's got too much time on his hands today i think!
