Topic: Keith on SNL - Blast from the past Return to archive

corgi37 So, anyway, there i was, downloading porn and other clips (I had just finished Maiden's "Holy Smoke"), when i noticed an old SNL episode on good old Foxtel (Aussie cable). Tom Hanks hosted it. Old as Moses. It was just after Hanks made Big. You know, when he made comedies? Anyway, i thought nothing of it, re-checked the Miss Nude Australia site, and then - BINGO! Keith doing "Struggle"! Bloody awesome. He looked a million bucks. Waddy was doing a very good Ronnie impersonation. Has anyone seen this? I loved Keith's green boots too. It was from 1988. If only i had seen the start of the episode (or at least paid attention), i could have taped the damn thing. I actually felt sorry for Keith at the end of the show when all the cast gather to say good night. No one spoke to him! Waddy was smooching with the comedians, while Keith and his band stood together. Oh, and another thing, has SNL EVER been funny? I just dont get why the Yanks love it. Oh, maybe its because of the guests?
02-23-04 10:03 PM
glencar It's only because of the guests, as far as I'm concerned. The show was funny in the late 70's but that was a generation ago. I'm amazed it's still on. I don't think Keith appeared on any skits for that episode & of course earlier in the show he did "Take It So Hard" which was the single in the USA.

I have the NYE show on video. The SNL show too. Both performances ROCK!!!!

the SNL show has a Keith cameo in the opening monologue when Tom Hanks is running around backstage and he bumps into Keith and says "hey Keith, one of your band members is threw up backstage. He must have the flu. You should check on him"
and Keef mumbled something like "thanks Tom" and walked away.

then they tore up Take It So Hard and Struggle. BAD ASS versions!!!

the NYE show was at the Academy and its your typical NYE TVcast bullshit... cheezy celebs in a Times Sq studio with streamers and party hats. Fortunately every 15 minutes or so they would flip back to Keef & The Winos live at the old Academy Theatre in NY. They played "Time Is On My Side" at the stroke of midnite with baloons and confetti falling on the crowd. And closed with an encore of "I'm Goin Down" with the guitarist and singer from PearlJam and Robert Cray sitting in. Charley Drayton was wearing a big ol leopard skin pimp hat! LOL!

damn... I miss the Wino's

Prodigal Son Keith was cool in that episode for sure. True enough, SNL (I have gone over seasons on Comedy Central to know this) was good from 1975-80, 1984-85 (w/Billy Chrystal, Martin Short), 1996-97, 1999-2001, and now it's back to crap yet again. Wow, over 29 seasons, that leaves 20 of them as pure crap. Some people love Adam Sandler/Chris Farley years but even that period was terribly written.

That intro is SO funny. In the opening segment Tom is trying to deny being the "nicest guy in show biz" while agressively BEING the nicest guy in show biz - he's walking around backstage greeting every member of the crew by name(if you look again you'll see that the stagehand with the horse - "be careful Mr Hanks, that horse is MEAN" - is the not-yet-famous Conan O'Brien)and he tells Keith that his SAX player is throwing up in the dressing room, which is an obvious reference to Bobby Keys, since Keith didn't HAVE a sax player that night. The heavily ironic delivery of "He must have THE FLU" was quite obviously a heroin reference - why else would Bobby Keys be throwing up in Keith's dressing room? And Keith's delivery of his one line is priceless. He looks at Tom like he's going to slit his throat, but then says "Thanks, Tom".

Conan has told the story about doing that skit a few times - he said Keith came over to him when he was holding the horse, and at first Conan thought he was just mumbling incoherently, but then he realized he was delivering a discourse on the overall importance of the horse in the history of civilization.

And the Winos certainly DID rock that night. Too cool.

corgi37 Thanks guys. Old SNL episodes are played all the time on one of our cable channels, as well as new ones of course, and it really is very poor now. But, its better than having needles in your eyes. So it looks like i missed out on another Keith perfomance. I had better be more careful. But, in cheerier news, i did manage to download the Stones doing respectable on SNL from 78. I have seen many lovely chaps on this board discuss that famous episode. Oh, and JB, what did you apologise for? I take no offence at anything any one says on this board. We are all stones disciples, and as such, brothers and sisters. No, better than that!

P.S. Now i have broadband i am in download heaven. I have 1/2 of the 76 abbatoir show so far as well as the afore-mentioned Respectable. I want to do a cd-r of the Stones rare clips. So far: Loving Cup. Brown Sugar on Top of the Pops and Respectable. I am mainly after rare and not official clips, as i have all of them. I might chuck in some Maiden to fill it out too.

priceless - as it could also be construed as a rather amusing drug related double entendre - those of you who know about these things will know what i mean - "horse" being stuff that when taken can result in "flu" like symptoms - particularly on withdrawal

corgi37 WHo toured Oz in 67? Damn, i put on another post it was 68. I knew it was one or the other. You know what? I would love to see them. But, also, i would really love to tell them to get stuffed. 37 years for Big Nose to carry a grudge is a bit childish. In fact, it gets me angry. I hope Pete's ears are ringing very badly this morning.
That'll larn im!
