Light or dark for spring?
(Filed: 26/02/2002)

Will the lure of the highlighting foils prove
too much for Jenni Baden Howard?

AT the first hint of spring, lacklustre brunettes (me
included) habitually head for the hairdressers to lighten
their locks - and their spirits - with a few sunkissed
streaks. Like that first, fantastically forgiving application
of self-tan, a sneaky half-head of highlights is a
time-honoured antidote to the end-of-winter beauty blues.

This year, however, several
high profile blondes have
broken with tradition and
opted to go darker for spring.
British actresses Emilia Fox
and Alice Evans have been
transformed into rich, glossy
brunettes, as has Hollywood
blonde Drew Barrymore (for
the moment). Elizabeth
Jagger, too, chose a dark,
sleek and centre-parted look
for the recent Matthew
Williamson show in New York.
