Saint Sway just when I thought I was numb to hearing Stones songs in commercials....

I thought I was over it... even hearing the stupid "I'm Free" remix every commercial break wasnt bothering me

but..

last night I heard LET IT BLEED in a lame ass beer commercial

bunch of homos sitting around a fire singing "we all need someone we can leeeeeen on......"

WTF???? How could they sell out one of their true classics???? One of my all-time favorites.

they just ruined the song for me. RUINED IT

FUCK THEM!!! GREEDY FUCKS! Like they need anymore $$$$$

FUCK THE STONES

I AM NEVER SPENDING A SINGLE PENNY ON THEM EVER AGAIN

Nellcote Please address your frustration to one Allen Klein.
You are in NYC, you know where the ABKCO offices are.
As I tell my kids, please, Deal With It.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

ABKCO owns the rights, but the Stones must have to at least tacitly approve these things, no? One of the lawyers around here must know. Nanky? As Keith says, "Call my liars!"
2nd March 2007 11:39 AM
Saint Sway definately. The Rolling Whores are getting paid for this ad.

************* IMMEDIATE END TO TRANSMISSION ***********

nankerphelge I have never found out to my personal satisfaction what exactly ABKCO owns and what the Stones own.

In copyright, there are two distinct rights at issue -- the rights to the sound recording (the recorded song) and the rights to the musical composition (the notes and lyrics).

ABKCO got rights to the pre-Sticky Fingers sound recordings for sure. I just don't know if he also got the rights to the underlying musical compositions or if Jagger/Richards kept them.

Assuming Jagger/Richards kept the musical comp. rights, I am pretty sure that ABKCO does not have to get their permission to use the song because copyright law allows for "compulsory licensing" -- a socialistic view of property rights that permits one to use another's musical composition without permission as long as a small royalty is paid to the owners of the musical composition.

For example, if I wanted to record Let It Bleed, I could do so without getting Jagger/Richard's permission, but I would owe them a certain royalty for each sale of my (less than good) rendition.

I think the same is true if ABKCO allowed the Stones' version to be used in a commercial - he owes Jagger/Richards something.

And I am sure he's good for it!!

Mel Belli Very interesting, Nanky. That's about all the knowledge my brain can stand on a sunny, warm Friday afternoon, however!
2nd March 2007 01:27 PM
pdog It hurts, it hurts us, my precious!
2nd March 2007 02:04 PM
Sir Stonesalot Wait a minute.

I never understood any of this "now it's a commercial and I can't listen to that song anymore!" bullshit.

It's not like the Stones wrote that song for use in a beer commercial. The integrity of the song itself is intact. If anything, the song's use in the commercial acknowledge's the fact that it it indeed a "classic". It's about fuckin' time the rest of the world catches up with us. But to deny yourself the pleasure of that song just because it was in a beer commercial is silly.

I mean, since when have The Stones ever been about
anything OTHER than getting paid? Sure the music is great...but why did they make that music? They made that music to earn money. It's their job and their livelyhood.

I'd rather they make their money like that, than to charge $1,000 for floor seats. Or to come up with another lame "tongue" pin. You know what I'm sayin'?

Take joy in the fact that you have been proven right! LIB is a classic...you were right all along. Now the whole world knows that you were right. You are now superior.

Rejoice!
2nd March 2007 02:08 PM
pdog I agree SS... It's like hearing Buzzcocks or Iggy music on TV ads. They didn't create this music to be used in commercials and never even inteneded to have much success. They just made the music. The Stones did make music to sell, but never made the music to be used in ads, 40 years later...
2nd March 2007 02:11 PM
Mel Belli I've never had trouble compartmentalizing the use of songs in commercials, either. I mean it's all commercial, in the general sense of "commerce." Otherwise we'd all be listening to "sound recordings" at the Library of Congress.

That's not to say things don't get silly; they often do. The surf-and-turf takeoff on the Turtles' "Happy Together" comes to mind -- but that was a crappy song to begin with, so who cares.

It's the association that you have with the song that gets ruined when it's in a commercial. It's like seeing a hot girl take a dump. Your association has been ruined. She is no longer the girl that you thought was hot. . . .she is now some girl you saw taking a dump. We all know that girls don't poop!

There's websites dedicated to this fetish... I'm not sure how I'd feel after seeing Mick or Keith take a crap...
Maybe the RO women could expand on how that would effect them...
I do compare music i don't like to poop.
This is getting weird, I need to rethink alot...

Sir Stonesalot I saw it last night.

Stupid commercial.

Great song.

Still, I have no idea what you are whining about.

Look man, if you are so weak minded as to let something as stupid as this commercial spoil your enjoyment of a perfectly good song...well, I pity you. I hope Dane Cook releases an entire album of BC covers. I'd pay $20.00 to watch you get all twisted up over that.

And anyone who thinks their hot chick don't shit is just a blind fool. We all know that they dump dainty little lady-like turds that smell like flowers on a spring day.

Joey LAST NIGHT I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL, NO, NO

LAST NIGHT I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL

GOD KNOWS THIS HEART OF MINE COULD USE A REST

ARE SOMEHOW TOO REAL TO REPLACE

LAST NIGHT I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL
THE SLEEPin' pill I TOOK WAS JUST A WASTE OF TIME
I COULDN'T CLOSE MY EYES 'CAUSE YOU WERE ON MY MIND

LAST NIGHT I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL
DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP, NO I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP AT ALL

but MORE AND MORE I FIND THE DREAMS I LEFT BEHIND
