Ten Thousand Motels

Copperhead Road Lyrics
by Steve Earle

Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road

Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road

I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Well the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road
Copperhead Road
Copperhead Road

FPM C10 This song makes me weep. I heard him play it in front of the Washington Monument one day.

Jerusalem
(Steve Earle)

I woke up this mornin' and none of the news was good
And death machines were rumblin' 'cross the ground where Jesus stood
And the man on my TV told me that it had always been that way
And there was nothin' anyone could do or say

And I almost listened to him
Yeah, I almost lost my mind
Then I regained my senses again
And looked into my heart to find

That I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Well maybe I'm only dreamin' and maybe I'm just a fool
But I don't remember learnin' how to hate in Sunday school
But somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again
But I still find some comfort now and then

Then the storm comes rumblin' in
And I can't lay me down
And the drums are drummin' again
And I can't stand the sound

But I believe there'll come a day when the lion and the lamb
Will lie down in peace together in Jerusalem

And there'll be no barricades then
There'll be no wire or walls
And we can wash all this blood from our hands
And all this hatred from our souls

And I believe that on that day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

+++++++++++

Steve Earle is the fucking MAN, no matter what you might think of his politics.

FPM C10 Conspiracy Theory
(Steve Earle)

What if I told you it was done with mirrors
What if I showed you it was all a lie
Better be careful, someone might hear ya
The walls have ears and the sky has eyes
What if I said you were only dreamin'
What you wanna bet that all you gotta do
Is open up your eyes and you will wake up screamin'
When you realize that it's all come true

chorus
Hush, now don't you believe it
Cover your head and close your eyes
Now, take it or leave it
Go back to bed
Now don't you cry

Half a million soldiers fly across the water
One in ten are never comin' back again
Fifty thousand sons who never grew to fathers
Don't you ever wonder who they might have been
What if you could've been there on that day in Dallas
What if you could wrestle back the hands of time
Maybe somethin' could've been done in Memphis
We wouldn't be livin' in a dream that's died

chorus

Go on and tell yourself again there are no secrets
Go on and tell yourself that you don't want to know
It's best that you believe that you don't hear the footsteps
That follow you around no matter where you go
Maybe you were thinkin' that it didn't matter
Maybe you believed nobody else would care
But once you've added every little lie together
You finally find the truth was always waiting there

FPM C10 What, no love for Steve? That's OK. I got enough for everyone.

Condi Condi

Oh Condi Condi beggin’ on my knees
Open up your heart and let me in wontcha please
Got no money but everybody knows
I love you Condi and I’ll never let you go
Sweet and dandy pretty as can be
You be the flower and I’ll be the bumble bee
Oh she loves me oops she loves me not
People say you’re cold but I think you’re hot

Oh, Condi, Condi
Oh, Condi, Condi

Oh Condi, Condi I’m talkin’ to you girl
What’s it gonna hurt come on give me a whirl
Shake your body now let me see you go
One time for me Oh Condi I love you so
Skank for me Condi show me what you got
They say you’re too uptight I say you’re not
Dance around me spinnin’ like a top
Oh Condi Condi Condi don’t ever stop

Oh Condi Condi Can’t you hear me call
I’m standin’ in the street outside your garden wall
Pocketful of money belly full of wine
Condi in my heart and romance on my mind
Listen to me Condi don’t be afraid
I come here tonight to chase your blues away
I’ll never hurt you I’ll treat you right
Oh Condaleeza won’t you come out tonight

Pretty little Condi precious as can be
Bet you never had another lover like me

Gazza anyone know of any impending album/touring plans (apart from a few one off gigs over the next few months)

I know he's producing Allison Moorer's new album (kinda convenient considering he married her) although I remember reading quite some time ago his next album may be another bluegrass one.

He usually plays Ireland every year or two. We got 2 visits to Belfast in 2004 - one solo show at the start of the year and then the Dukes show in November - so maybe we got a bit spoiled. I saw them both (first time I'd ever seen him) and was so knocked out by the Dukes show I went to see him in Glasgow a week later as well. Met him and Allison after the Belfast show and they were great fun. Time he came back, I'm anxious for a return visit

FPM C10 Condi is HOT! She makes Ann Coulter look like a skanky horse-faced female impersonator.

(Ha ha - I couldn't think of Ann Coulter's name so I googled "right wing bitch" and she was the first thing that popped up!)

Steve writes cool Civil War songs too. (I'm a closet Civil War geek)

Ben McCulloch
(Steve Earle)

We signed up in San Antone my brother Paul and me
To fight with Ben McCulloch and the Texas infantry
Well the poster said we'd get a uniform and seven bucks a week
The best rations in the army and a rifle we could keep
When I first laid eyes on the general I knew he was a fightin' man
He was every inch a soldier every word was his command
Well his eyes were cold as the lead and steel forged into tools of war
He took the lives of many and the souls of many more

Well they marched us to Missouri and we hardly stopped for rest
Then he made this speech and said we're comin' to the test
Well we've got to take Saint Louie boys before the yankees do
If we control the Mississippi then the Federals are through

Well they told us that our enemy would all be dressed in blue
They forgot about the winter's cold and the cursed fever too
My brother died at Wilson's creek and Lord I seen him fall
We fell back to the Boston Mountains in the North of Arkansas

CHORUS
Goddamn you Ben McCulloch
I hate you more than any other man alive
And when you die you'll be a foot soldier just like me
In the devil's infantry

And on the way to Fayetteville we cursed McCulloch`s name
And mourned the dead that we'd left behind and we was carrying the lame
I killed a boy the other night who'd never even shaved
I don't even know what I'm fightin' for I ain't never owned a slave

So I snuck out of camp and then I heard the news next night
The Yankees won the battle and McCulloch lost his life

8th March 2006 10:54 AM
Egbert Fleabit - have you been to any of the CW battlefields? I spent a day at Antietam a couple years ago. Most of the battlefield has been preserved - was cool to walk down the Bloody Lane and imagine what it must have been like back then. Would like to check out Gettysburg next.

That's all I saw listed yesterday when I looked - a few dates with the Bluegrass Dukes, and some solo stuff, including an appearance at an Anti-War rally in NYC on Mar 20. That's the day after we're going to see the Pogues (thankfully I couldn't sell my ticket when I wanted to)and I'm half-way expecting Steve to be at the gig. I believe he's a fan and a friend of the Pogues. I would LOVE to buy him a damn drink.

I'm not planning on attending the rally, as Steve's the only artist on the bill I care to see (Michael friggin' Stipe is the headliner)and I'm sure Steve will do most of the songs he did in DC last September. We filmed that set with 3 digital video cameras and I'm just about done editing it. Steve is a rabble-rouser second only to Woody Guthrie.

Allison was in DC. She brought Steve his mandolin. He introduced her as "the world's prettiest guitar roadie".

Is she Steve's 8th wife, or 7th?

Here is one of the greatest songs ANYBODY'S ever written:

Goodbye
(Steve Earle)

I remember holdin on to you
All them long and lonely nights I put you through
Somewhere in there I'm sure I made you cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
CHORUS

But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I may never go in my life again
Was I just off somewhere just too high
But I can't remember if we said goodbye

I only miss you here every now and then
Like the soft breeze blowin; up from the Caribbean
Most Novembers I break down and cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye

CHORUS

Oh my yes. I live on the east coast, so I've been to Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, New Market, VMI, the Shenandoah Valley, Manassas, Spotsylvania...and Gettysburg a million times. It's about 90 minutes from my house.

I'd be glad to be your battlefield guide anytime you wanna go. Just give me some advance notice. It's highly over-done, but still amazing. Everyone should see Devil's Den and Little Round Top.

FPM C10 And just to tie all the parts of this thread together into a nifty little bow, here's a Steve Earle song about Gettysburg from the POV of an Irishman which he sang at the anti-war rally in DC...

I am Kilrain and I'm a fightin' man and I come from County Clare
And the Brits would hang me for a Fenian so I took me leave of there
And I crossed the ocean in the "Arrianne" the vilest tub afloat
And the captain's brother was a railroad man and he met us the boat
So I joined up with the 20th Maine like I said my friend I'm a fighting man
And we're marchin' south in the pouring rain and we're all goin' down to Dixieland
I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and we fight for Chamberlain
‘Cause he stood right with us when the Johnnies came like a banshee on the wind
When the smoke cleared out of Gettysburg many a mother wept
For many a good boy died there, sure, and the air smelted just like death

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and I'd march to hell and back again
For Colonel Joshua Chamberlain - we're all goin' down to Dixieland

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and I damn all gentlemen
Whose only worth is their father's name and the sweat of a workin' man
Well we come from the farms and the city streets and a hundred foreign lands
And we spilled our blood in the battle's heat
Now we're all Americans

I am Kilrain of the 20th Maine and did I tell you friend I'm a fightin' man
And I'll not be back this way again, ‘cause we're all goin' down to Dixieland

FPM C10 yeah, that's one of my favorites.

You have "Train A'Comin'", don't you? That's the one that EVERYONE needs to have.

Steve does a great version of "Before They Make Me Run" too. He's got the credentials.

That ones my second favorite, right behind Copperhead Road. Guitar Town and Exit 0 are up there as well. And yes, his "Before They Make Me Run" is great. Have you heard his live version of "Dead Flowers"??
8th March 2006 11:58 AM
FPM C10 I am ashamed to say I have not heard it. Is it on "Die Like An Aviator" or whatever that live album's called?

Egbert, just drop me an email when you have your Gettysburg plans together ([email protected]) or PM me. My son and I are always looking for an excuse to drive down there.

Please dont. Hes been sober for about ten years! And yes, hes recorded with the Pogues before ("Johnny Come Lately" from 'Copperhead Road'). Considering their habits, maybe not the most advisable people for him to be hanging with these days, however!

she was the opening act on the European tour, sang on a few songs during his set (a cool way of getting the most from your opening act) and by the end of the tour they were an item. She's delightful.

quote:

Only his 7th marriage, but his 6th wife (one of them he married twice). To be fair to the guy, he hadnt married anyone in about ten years before last year. In the late 80's/early 90's, he was collecting wives like Keith Richards would collect guitar picks.

Gazza It is indeed on "Shut Up and Die Like An Aviatar"

"Before They Make Me Run" was on the EP he released with The Supersuckers in 1997

he's also frequently played "Sweet Virginia" in concert (it was a regular on the last Dukes' tour) and going further back has also covered "Take It Or Leave It"
