Stones to roll in for an April gig

Published on Mar 5, 2003

The Rolling Stones will rock Thailand for the first time next month as part of the Asian leg of their 40th-anniversary tour, Kirk Chaba, of BEC-Tero, the tour organiser, said at a press conference yesterday. The band will perform at the Impact Arena on April 8, and ticket prices will be among the highest ever, ranging from Bt1,500 to Bt8,000 each.

A total of 12,000 tickets will be available from March 8.

The British band will jet into the Thai capital for the one-off performance just days after they play their maiden gigs in China - Shanghai on April 1 and Beijing on April 4.

According to a BEC-Tero spokesman, who asked not to be named, the concert production costs alone - excluding artists' fees - will be around Bt10 million.

The band is expected to play around 30 songs as part of its celebration.

Asked whether the band had any requests, the source said none, adding: "They didn't ask the hotel to repaint their rooms, like some stars."

The source said that in the US the band was accompanied by around 100 bodyguards but declined to reveal what the security measures would be in Thailand.

Rumours of a Bangkok gig had been rife for months, with organisers and insiders bandying about possible dates to fit in with the band's "Licks World Tour".

The Stones recently released "Forty Licks", a two-CD collection of their greatest hits, to coincide with the band's 40th anniversary.

Rolling Stones to rock Thailand

BANGKOK:

Legendary rockers the Rolling Stones will play their first-ever concert in Thailand next month as part of the Asia leg of their 40th anniversary tour, organisers ssaid yesterday.

"The concert is going to be played at Bangkok's Impact Arena on April 8," project manager Kirk Chaba of event organiser BEC-Tero said.

Most of the 12,000 tickets for the show will go on sale on March 8 and cost between BD13 to BD80, he said.

The venerable British band jet into the Thai capital for the one-off performance just days after they play their maiden gigs in mainland China, in Shanghai on April 1 and Beijing on April 4.

Rumours of a Bangkok gig had been rife for months as organisers and insiders bandied about possible dates in the kingdom to fit in with the ageing band's Licks World Tour.

Although there is no new album, the Stones have released Forty Licks, a two-CD collection of their greatest hits to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the group's formation.
