GAZZA KEPT ORDERING PLATES OF RAW LIVER
Friday February 22,2008
By Mark Blacklock
Tortured football legend Paul Gascoigne could be held in a secure psychiatric hospital for up to a year after being sectioned following a bizarre rampage in a luxury hotel.
The wayward sportsman was detained by police under the Mental Health Act after the star terrorised staff and guests at the five-star Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle.
Gascoigne – known and loved my millions by his nickname Gazza – set off fire alarms before grabbing a porter by throat in a scuffle after refusing to leave by management who viewed him as a “potential menace”.
According to staff, the troubled former England star had been staying at the £240-a-night hotel for the past fortnight.
But workers claimed the former footballer, 40, was “clearly not well” and had spiralled into increasingly eccentric behaviour including ordering plates or raw liver from room service and carrying three plastic parrots with him.
Gascoigne was last night being held in a secure mental unit where doctors ordered him to be held for up to six weeks under section 2 of the Mental Health Act.
But if psychiatrists remain concerned for his emotional welfare they can then order his detention under section 3 of the Act - for a full year.
The player’s plight emerged after reports of increasingly bizarre behaviour by the man who has battled the demons of drink, drugs and mental illness for years.
The ex-England star, who has battled alcohol and mental health problems for years, passed hours at a time playing alone on a Wii computer games console, sometimes persuading staff to join in, and ate and drank on room service.
At times he would send for regular orders of whisky, and when he did venture out his behaviour startled some guests and staff.
Gazza, famous for his clownish streak, enjoyed carrying battery-operated toy parrots under his arms, which played a recorded message when a button was pressed.
One member of staff said: “He’s been making them talk to the other guests for a laugh.
“They say things ‘Give us a kiss’ - but they also say stronger stuff like “F-off’, which isn’t so funny.”
He added: “Gazza’s a regular here and almost everyone working here couldn’t like the guy more, he’s a great bloke.
“But it’s been more and more obvious that he’s not a well man. He’s needed help.”
One night Gazza asked the night porter to get him some replacement batteries for the plastic parrots. When he called at his room, the player opened the door with a parrot under each arm swearing.
One hotel worker claims to have seen Gazza order plates of raw liver from the kitchen because it is “good for the blood” and several reported the player answering his door unselfconciously naked.
The situation came to a head in the small hours of Wednesday morning when the former midfield maestro, who was living on the seventh floor of the stylish hotel, set off fire alarms.
Despite all guests being evacuated Gascoigne refused to leave. Onlookers said the former Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio player then started arguing with the night porter before grappling with the member of staff.
It was reported yesterday that Gascoigne had held a knife to the workers throat but this was dismissed by police and management.
The footballer, who has admitted to enjoying staying in hotels because he liked “the feeling of being cut off yet looked after”, then checked into the Hilton Hotel, a stone’s throw from the Malmaison.
On Wednesday evening uniformed officers arrived at the Hilton Hotel, overlooking the River Tyne at Gateshead, after first warning staff they were on their way.
He was then detained under the Mental Health Act before being taken to a secure psychiatric hospital yesterday.
Last night the Malmaison’s spokesman Nigel Massey admitted that Gazza was very popular among staff, who were deeply saddened by his mental problems.
“He had been staying with us for almost two weeks and during that time staff had become very fond of him,” he said.
“We’re very sorry for Paul. The message I got from staff there was ‘Come back any time Paul, mate’.”
He said the confrontation with a hotel worker following the fire alarm fiasco was the final straw, the reason he was asked to leave.
“The porter felt a little intimidated and things got a little heated - some words were said and a bit of grabbing went on. But the porter was not hurt and has made no formal complaint and it has blown over.”
Northumbria Police confirmed that they detained a man under the Mental Health Act.”We don’t need anything like a doctor’s order in those circumstances,” he said.
“It’s the kind of power that a police officer has and exercises in exceptional circumstances, for example if he had to stop someone from jumping from the Tyne Bridge.”
There has been no suggestion that Gazza was at any time threatening to harm himself deliberately, and his detention was unconnected with the fire alarm fiasco at the Malmaison.
The spokesman stressed that at no time was Gazza under arrest, but declined to say how police came to be involved - other than to say a call had been received from a concerned “member of the public”.
The Malmaison said that their involvement ended the moment Gascoigne left their hotel, and a spokeswoman for the Hilton said the first they knew of anything untoward was when the police contacted them.
“While there was no disturbance caused, we did receive a phone call from the police, and he was escorted calmly from the hotel,” she said.
Although Gascoigne was staying at both hotels by himself, he is understood to have left in the company of one of his sisters - Anna-Marie or Lindsay - who both live nearby.
Last night, no one from the family was available for comment on the footballer’s health. It is understood that he is being kept at a secure facility somewhere in the North of England.
Gascoigne has had a troubled history of emotional instability and erratic behaviour.
Once regarded as one of the world’s best footballers, his playing career has been plagued by personal problems, many linked to his heavy drinking.
In 2005, fears over his general health were triggered when he was hospitalised with pneumonia, and last year he underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer after injuring himself during 40th bithday celebrations at Gateshead’s Marriot - yet another Tyneside hotel.
