12 X 5 is, of course, an erstwhile "expanded" version of an earlier EP called 5 X 5 (it had 5 songs instead of 12). English radio operators during the war had an expression, "I read you five-by-five," which is the equivalent of the US "Loud and clear." The five-by-five I take to be some kind of radio-directional thingy - what's it mean, Gazza?

And wasn't this title a play on the Beatles "Let It Be"? Kinda reminds me of the headlines..."The Beatles want to hold your hand. The Stones want to burn your town." |

Nope.
Let It Bleed came out five months BEFORE Let It Be. Although the Beatles RECORDED their song first (for the album "Get Back" which was then changed to "Let It Be" for the purposes of accompanying the film of the same name) |

Its also interesting to me how many of these album titles have phrases which have since passed into common parlance separate from their use in musical culture - I'd never heard the term "Emotional Rescue" used for example before the Stones released an album of that name. I've also seen expressions like Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya Yas Out used widely. Not to mention numerous song titles... (You Cant Always Get What You Want and I Cant Get No Satisfaction being maybe the two most commonly used)
And even in music circles - you had a record label named Beggars Banquet, the expression "Its Only Rock 'n'Roll" has remained as familiar as 'Sex and Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll' or other similar cliches - and theres bound to at least have been a porn film somewhere with Sticky Fingers in the title.....
Their influence in popular culture is enormous.

True that. There is also a show on cable tv here in the states called Gimme Shelter. It's a do-it-youself home repair show.

You gotta see more British WWII movies from the 40s or 50s, such as Michael Powell's war movies (Life & Death of Col. Blimp, etc.) You hear "I read you five-by-five" a lot, coming from guys in RAF uniforms and clunky old headsets with leather straps, seated by a radar sweep. It means "perfect reception," and I once read why it means that but have forgotten.
Don't forget, Mick was born in a war, so you can call him a War, War Baby... And everybody of a certain age at EMI and Decca and BBC after all was a home front veteran.

5 By 5 is a radio count we do to test how a frequency sounds. It's used in the US also. Many of these things are international in scope. |

the album titles in the last two decades tend to be tied in with the concept of the stage show that theyre touring behind (Steel Wheels, Bigger Bang etc)
No wonder they changed that one to Bridges To Babylon. Hard to see how theyd have got a stage design built around Blessed Poison.

I can't believe that no one has listed these two titles yet:
The Rolling Stones (England's Newest Hitmakers)
Rolling Stones, Now!
What is not cool about either of them? |

Someone suggested a while back they call their NEXT album "England's Oldest Hitmakers".
I think that would be pretty cool and a nice pot-shot at the critics who are always going on about their ages, and they could do it complete with an up to date reconstruction of the pose thats on the original album cover (a la Beatles 1962-66/1967-70 albums) |

The regular google search shows this site as the main 'hit' on the first few pages, but on checking 'google images', I see what you mean! Yikes!
Having just seen some of the entries there, I'm sure you bookmarked them anyway... ! |

Problem with that is they'd actually have to knuckle down and write a hit! |

I always thought that "Between The Buttons" was a reference to one looking at the Little bit of Skin seen "Between The Buttons" on a Busty Babe!

It certainly is, they looked out of their album covers like they'd call anybody's bluff, the first rebellious rock 'N' Roll band by far, Out of their heads is another one, this was a far cry from The sickening pop bands at the time, with their smiling, like Herman Hermits, The Stones looked like a street gang compared to them. |
