I know this is a Stones board but was was wondering if anyone had an opinion on Robert De Niro. Probably the best actor in the world or one of them, I sure everyone will agree. Whats up with him lately why is he making such shit movies all of a sudden? Mad management? whatI wonder?
how can you go from making movies such as this :
Jackie Brown
Ronin
Sleepers
Heat
Casino
The Godfather II
Cape Fear
Goodfellas
The Untouchables
Angel Heart
The Mission
Raging Bull
The Deer Hunter
to :
Analyze This
The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle
Showtime
Analyze That
Shark Tale
Godsend
I must say that I thought 'Meet the parents' and 'meet the Fockers' were both very funny. |

Bobby de Niro is my all-time fave actor for sure. But you're right. The stuff he makes nowadays sucks. But DAMN he can act when he wants to.......

well, Meet the Fockers is his latest film, so you cant really dismiss his recent films as shitty.
DeNiro takes a lot of roles in relatively minor films to help fund his TriBeCa company. I guess it pays the bills to enable him to concentrate on other ventures he has while he's waiting on the next "biggie" (even though hes the best actor on the planet, his films arent generally blockbusters anyway. "Once Upon a Time in america" - for my money, one of the greatest half dozen films I've ever seen - lost an absolute fortune)
back in the 80's and before he chose his films very carefully. Since he set up TriBeCa productions in the early 90s, its not been the case, I think for the above reasons.
He's also had to turn down some potentially great roles. Scorsese wanted him to play Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York, but because he was involved in a complicated custody battle for his kids, he couldnt leave the US to spend several months on location in Rome for it. (That said, Lewis was so brilliant in that film its quite a tribute to say you couldnt have imagined deNiro being any better)
As well as the above, there simply arent IMO many great films out there, and for a 61 year old actor, not too many potentially great roles either

Hey Voodoo...
They ran this exact topic in "Parade" magazine this week in the US with the same questions
The answer was Am Ex is a huge donor to his "Tribeca" film festival/studio, etc (Sundance lite)
And he had a ton of kids by different women/ ala Jagger to support plus he is listed as "Producer" on the crap movies
which translates into $$$$$$$$$$$

Well I agree on all that Gaz. Not the bit about his roles of today not sucking though. I believe they do. Did you by the way hear that he's gonna do a Taxi Driver 2??? Well, he is if all goes well. |

he scared the shit outta me in cape fear when we was hanging on to the drive shaft of their car....
i mean, mitchem was evil in the original, but that just creeped me out. and the speaking in tongues in the last, drowning scene. he was incredible.
i've wondered about it too, his movies have sort of taken a turn south....disappointing.

Yeah Kath. Cape Fear rocks. I watched it last weekend. There's some REAL good acting in there. By Nolte, Lang, Lewis and De Niro. All of them does a bang out job in that flick.
And the way Bobby delivers some of the lines is simply amazing. Like these:
"I am Virgil and I will lead you through the cicles of Hell. We are now in the 9th circle. The circle of traitors. Traitors to fellow-men, traitors to humanity, traitors to God".
"You white trash piece of shit, I'm better than you ALL. I can out-read you, I can out-think you and I can out-philosophy you. And I'm gonna out-last you. I AAAAAM LIKE GOD............."
"Are you threatening me?..............I said are you threatening me? You watch your mouth, or things here could develop quite roughly, things could get out of hand".
"Are you a cop, or were you a cop? Or were you not good enough to remain on the force, 'cause you know that's the feeling I'm getting here".
And of course tons of other stuff. |

I sorta liked Rocky & Bullwinkle. It was well made... adequate... Who's gonna take it seriously?
Favorite "De Niro flicks" (to watch De Niro):
The Last Tycoon
Mean Streets
1900
Favorite flicks where De Niro performed:
Goodfellas
Once Upon A Time In America (James Woods is a tough competitor.)
Most embarrassing performance:
The Fan (Even though his character seemed to be a Stones enthusiast.)
As for Brando: the greatest film actor ever, IMO; always self-confident and relaxed. Like the Olivier of Marathon Man or Dracula (1979), he had the mysterious ability to turn the campiest role into a tour de force. Maybe I'm crazy, but I just couldn't take my eyes out of Brando even in his most pedestrian movies (The Brave, Dr. Moreau).

I just Watched RONIN last night
I have to say that it is a seriously underated movie
I loved it Bob De Niro is great in that I guess when compared to his other breakout performances It pales in comparision. However a Really good movie all the same.
I also watched CAPE FEAR for the first time in years recently and you forget what a awesome job he did in that movie as Max Cady.
'Meet the Parents' and 'Meet the Fockers'were absolutely great mostly because of Ben Stillers genius. Its amazing how intimidating Robert De Niro can be with one look in these movies. all credit to him. |

Mr. Pleasant: You don't like The Fan? I loved it. And the music is good too.
I am semi-collecting De Niro flicks. I have: The Fan (Good), Raging Bull (Awesome), Goodfellas (Awesome), Taxi Driver (Awesome), Once Upon A Time In America (Awesome), Godfather 2 (Like Godfather 1 better. But it's cool), A Bronx Tale (From good to awesome), Casino (Awesome), Ronin (Very good), Cape Fear (Awesome, Mean Streets (Very good), 15 Minutes (Sucks) and Heat (Average).
De Niro is the "Mick 'n Keef" of acting no doubt. |

He was a terrific villain. But I don't know if the director knew what he was doing in the final sequences. They're involuntarily funny (and yet they do not diminish De Niro's dangerous character). The Simpsons made a hysterical parody, which I almost like better than the original. |

I don't like Tony Scott. Had he directed Cape Fear, it would have been something like The Fan: flashy and predictable. But great music though! |

minor Stones connection with that film - watch again the scene that's set in the little harbour .
That's Villefranche-sur-Mer
Lots of comments about De Niro's underrated talent as a comedian in the two "Meet The Parents" films, but dont forget his performance in "Midnight Run". It's great fun
