Break The Spell I recently re-discovered this little underrated gem, its amazing it never made it on to a proper studio album, it would have fit perfectly on Aftermath or Between The Buttons. It first showed up on the Flowers compilation and does fit well there. I love how Keith's guitar is on one side and Brian's on the other. This tour they brought out "As Tears Go By" and "Sway", I think this tune would make a nice surprise in the current live set, maybe a good b-stage tune.

gimmekeef Yes indeed....a goodie...along with Ride On Baby...with lines like...."By the time you're 30 gonna look 65!"....

"Ride On Baby" is another good one too. Its amazing some songs on Flowers like those 2 were never intended for release, and when Flowers came out Keith said he was surprised people dug those songs.

I would love to hear it but it would be a huge bomb that would buzz kill all but 9 attendees.

Sadly I think you're right. I saw that the last couple tours where people sat down, and were bewildered by songs like "Sway", "No Expectations", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", etc. So I guess Sittin' On A Fence might have a similar effect. Still love to hear it :}!!

winter Sittin' On a Fence is a real gem.

Definitely in my top 5 never been played before, along with Winter, Dear Doctor, High N' Dry, Let it Loose, and that the hell, make it 6, Loving Cup.

Saint Sway and keep in mind that those are songs off of their biggest and most important albums. If "fans" at Stones shows cant even recognize a song off of Sticky Fingers or Exile how can we hope for them not ask for a lethal injection during a nugget like SOAF?

the "fans" that fill the seats know only the greatest hits. This is completely the Stones own doing of course.

Cup's been played. Some good versions out there. See Stones '02/03. And Black Crowes '05.

Correct, too much empahsis is put on hits packages and reissues of out of print hits packages. Most people that I know of, if they own any Stones at all, its either Hot Rocks, 40 Licks or Jump Back. This is why when they play the lesser known songs off their best albums they often go over the majority of the crowds head, sad to say.

I'd love to see all those songs you mentioned tried out live, as well as Jigsaw Puzzle, Tops and Shw Was Hot.

nanatod "the "fans" that fill the seats know only the greatest hits. This is completely the Stones own doing of course."

Solution is to do what Cheap Trick once did-- announce 4 shows at venue, with each night spotlighting a particular record. One night was "Cheap Trick in Color," one was the a different album, etc.

The Who did the same thing on their 1996 tour. They played Quadrophenia straight through, and then did warhorses in the encore.

If the Stones adopted this modus operandi, we could have a Let it Bleed show one night, and a Goats Head Soup the next.
The Stones marketing juggernaut might not go for the idea, however.

Good idea, of course this was kind of attempted on the 2002-03 Licks Tour, only with 3-4 songs from a particular album and not the whole album played. Would be interesting to see a complete album attempted of course.

When last heard from Cheap Trick was the opening act for a Nascar driver signing autographs at an amusement park.

I'm not making that up, either.

When asked where their once-stellar career went wrong, Bun E. Carlos said "It all started when we announced 4 shows at a venue, with each night spotlighting a particular record. One night was "Cheap Trick in Color," one was a different album, etc. "

I like this idea Nanatod and agree that the Stones marketers might not bite.

basically its what the Licks Tour should of been.

But heres a possible solution:
You make it a small tour (think No Security) to only major markets. Cities where they could play 3 or 4 different sized venues.

For example, in SF/Bay area they do 2 nights at the Oakland arena - Sticky one night, Exile the next. And one night of Beggars Banquet at the Fillmore. IORR at the Great American Music Hall. You can substitute the albums, but you get the idea.

do like you mentioned with the Who. 1st half is the album. 2nd half is the hits.

I like that idea, and imagine how long of a show the Exile night would be, after the album is played, if they do a set of 10 big hits, thats 28 songs, like the Steel Wheels tour.

Here's an article about what the Trick did in 1998:

CHICAGO -- Rob Weber had a big decision to make last week: pay up to $300 and catch the Rolling Stones in their final U.S. gig, or slap down $100 for four nights of hometown boys Cheap Trick and all that's sure to come with that rock
package.

He made what he felt was the obvious decision.

And, so far, he has no regrets.

"I got my money's worth today alone," Weber said after the Cheap Trick opening performance at the Metro on Thursday. A Cheap Trick fan, Weber had purchased a special package that allows him entrance into all four Trick shows, as well as VIP passes to after-concert parties.

While he decided to pass on the Stones show, choosing not to fork over the money for what has been called the most expensive rock ticket in the city's history, Weber was not disappointed by his choice. "They haven't lost their stuff," he said about Cheap Trick's live performance.

The Trick began a four-night stay in Chicago that night before a sold-out crowd of 1,100 gathered at the popular Metro club. The '70s power-pop rockers are in the midst of a nostalgia tour celebrating their 20th anniversary and the re- release on CD of their early music catalog, including the famed Live at Budokan album that first thrust Rick Nielsen and the crew into the limelight. Several cities around the country get a performance re-creating Cheap Trick's breakthrough Budokan show from 1978.

Chicago fans, however, were treated to that classic disc on Thursday night only. That show is to be followed by a series of performances of the band's first three albums in order of release, including its self-titled LP on Friday, In Color with special opening guest Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday (May 2) and Heaven Tonight on Sunday to close out the set.

Having attended the first night, Irene Baki, a fan of the Trick, said, "They didn't stray from the album at all. I would like to have seen a little more improvisation. I have a wedding to go to, otherwise I'd be at all four nights. I'll be back Sunday, though."

Adding to the excitement, Baki reported seeing Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan in attendance. "He was rockin' out," she said.

And while Corgan will soon be rocking out in the truest sense of the words on the Metro stage, each night will feature local bands opening for Cheap Trick. Thursday and Friday night's shows will have the Smoking Popes -- as well as Triplefastaction at Friday's show -- and Sunday's show will have Local H on the bill.

Fans were able to purchase a four-show "platinum" package for $100 that included tickets to all four nights, a limited edition CD and a VIP party after the first show. Tickets for individual shows were $20.

When asked about their reaction to the opening-night show, Jim Ogburn and Pete Krakowski looked back and forth at each other. "What was the word?" Ogburn asked. " 'Wow,' " he said. "That's all Pete said to me all night. I said 'Wow,' too. I think we said it at the same time," Ogburn said.

And while they may be older and a little wiser about their over-the-top rock style, Cheap Trick apparently haven't lost their power and volume. "I'm a little deaf, so that must be a good sign," Baki said."

An interesting article. I don't recall the Stones in 1997-98 saying that it would be their last US gig. Crazy rumors!!

FPM C10 Yeah, and actually they're making a comeback - last time they were at Hershey Park it was free to see them open, as I said, for some Nascar asshole who was signing autographs. Now they're coming back as the opening act for Aerosmith, who are a notch above Nascar on my cool-o-meter. I see they're also playing at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino in Milwaukee.

Spell,

I think the article was referring to it as the final U.S. gig of the tour, which it was.

Great singles and album out-takes on there. The whole 1966-67 era had great experimentation with different instruments and sounds. They weren't locked in to one particular sound quite yet.

I withdraw Cup, and add Slave to my list and Down in the Hole.

it was just OK. Could of been better but the keyboard player didnt nail it. Which is weird because the keyboard break in "Thorn In My Pride" is basically the bastard step son of Cup's piano intro.

Chris sounded great on it - very soulful with the background singers. And it was one of the Fillmore shows where they had brought in horns which was a cool touch. But Eddie's keys was just off...

I'm sure they'll take another stab at it.
