Ten Thousand Motels Rolling Stones 'to play in China'
BBC

The Rolling Stones are to hold their first concert in China three years after gigs in Shanghai and Beijing were cancelled following the Sars outbreak.

The veteran rock stars will play at an 8,000-seat stadium in Shanghai on 8 April, according to Chinese promoters.

The band called off performances in the city in 2003 amid fears over the spread of the respiratory illness.

Earlier this month, more than one million fans saw the Rolling Stones play a free concert in Brazil.

Lucrative

Ticket prices for the Shanghai gig ranged from 300 to 3000 yuan (£21.50 to £215) according to the promoters, Emma Entertainment.

"The Rolling Stones' first-ever concert in China, do not miss it," the company said on its website.

A giant stage was erected in Rio for the concert on 18 February

The gig is not listed on the Rolling Stones' website, although new dates in Greece, Australia and New Zealand were announced earlier this week.

The Stones' A Bigger Bang tour, which has so far made over $3m (£1.72m) in ticket sales.

The recent concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro took place just a week before Rio's famous carnival.

The stage, facing Sugar Loaf Mountain, was the height of a seven-storey building and had a walkway linking it to the Stones' hotel.

Some of their songs that were banned there in the past for "disgusting" lyrics include "Beast Of Burden", "Honky Tonk Women", "Lets Spend The Night Together" and "Brown Sugar". I believe the Chinese edition of Forty Licks has these songs deleted from it.
