It kinda means someone who roams with no particular place of permanant habitat. It also means someone who feels the need to travel or move on reguardless of personal or emotional attachments.

Zack Dude, haven't you ever heard of the proverb "A rolling stone gathers no moss"? I think that might be your answer to the origin of the term "rolling stone."

VoodooChileInWOnderl The term is very old, older than any blues man from the 20s, as explained above the origin is an old proverb that says "A rolling stone gathers no moss"

A rolling stone according to a dictionary of English and American idioms/slangs/proverbs/cliches/etc:

A person who changes jobs or where he/she loves often

Nellcote Lyrics for analysis.....

Muddy Waters
Rollin' Stone

Well, I wish I was a catfish,
Swimmin in a oh, deep, blue sea.
I would have all you good lookin women,
Fishin, fishin after me.
Sure 'nough, a-after me.
Sure 'nough, a-after me.
Oh 'nough, oh 'nough, sure 'nough.

I went to my baby's house,
And I sit down oh, on her steps.
She said, Now, come on in now, Muddy.
You know, my husband just now left.
Sure 'nough, he just now left.
Sure 'nough, he just now left.
Sure 'nough, oh well, oh well.

Well, my mother told my father,
Just before hmmm, I was born,
I got a boy child's comin,
He's gonna be, he's gonna be a rollin stone,
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin stone,
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin stone,
Oh well he's a, oh well he's a, oh well he's a.

Well, I feel, yes I feel,
Feel that I could lay down oh, time ain't long.
I'm gonna catch the first thing smokin,
Back, back down the road I'm goin.
Back down the road I'm goin.
Back down the road I'm goin.
Sure 'nough back, sure 'nough back.

Jaxx according to the dictionary of cultural literacy, the saying is indeed a proverb as voodoo stated above. its origins are traced back to 52 BC and is attributed to being one of the Maxims (conventional wisdom, truth), more specifically Maxim 524 of Publius Syrus' writings.

the dictionary of cultural literacy defines proverbs as short, pithy sayings that reflect the accumulated wisdom, prejudices, and superstitions of the human race.In general, the particular phrasing of the proverbs, not their ideas, is what belongs to the cultural literacy of each nation and language. The ideas they express are often common to many nations. for example, The difference between the Japanese and the American is summed up in their opposite reactions to the proverb (popular in both nations), “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” Epidemiologist S. Leonard Syme observes that to the Japanese, moss is exquisite and valued; a stone is enhanced by moss; hence a person who keeps moving and changing never acquires the beauty and benefits of stability. To Americans, the proverb is an admonition to keep rolling, to keep from being covered with clinging attachments.

stonedinaustralia I’m a rollin’ stone all alone and lost
For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway

Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a woman’s lies makes a life like mine
O the day we met, I went astray
I started rolling down that lost highway

I was just a lad, nearly 22
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I’m lost, too late to pray
Lord I take a cost, o the lost highway

Now boy’s don’t start to ramblin’ round
On this road of sin are you sorrow bound
Take my advice or you’ll curse the day
You started rollin’ down that lost highway

MrPleasant I'M SCARED, I'M SCARED, I'M SCARED,
I'M SCARED.
I'M SCARED, I'M SCARED, I'M SCARED,
AS THE YEARS ROLL AWAY,
AND THE PRICE THAT I PAID
AND THE STRAWS SLIP AWAY.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SUFFER,
IT IS WHAT IT IS.
NO BELL BOOK OR CANDLE
CAN GET YOU OUT OF THIS, OH NO!

I'M STONED, I'M STONED, I'M STONED,
I'M STONED-ONED.
I'M STONED, I'M STONED, I'M STONED,
EV'RY DAY OF MY LIFE,
I JUST MANAGE TO SURVIVE,
I JUST WANNA STAY ALIVE.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY
IN HEAVEN OR HELL.
JUST DANCE TO THE MUSIC,
YOU DO IT SO WELL.

HATRED AND JEALOUSY, GONNA BE THE DEATH OF ME,
I GUESS YOU KNEW IT RIGHT FROM THE START.
SING A LOT ABOUT LOVE AND PEACE,
DON'T WANNA SEE THE RED RAW MEAT,
THE GREEN EYED GODDAMN STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART.

I'M TIRED, I'M TIRED, I'M TIRED,
I'M TIRED, I'M TIRED, I'M TIRED
OF BEING SO ALONE.
NO PLACE TO CALL MY HOME,
LIKE A ROLLING STONE.

FPM C10 It was the third of September.
That day I'll always remember, yes I will.
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died.
I never got a chance to see him.
Never heard nothing but bad things about him.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama just hung her head and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

Well, well

Hey Mama, is it true what they say,
that Papa never worked a day in his life?
And Mama, some bad talk going around town
saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife.
And that ain't right.
Hey, talk about Papa doing some store front preaching.
Talked about saving souls and all the time leeching.
Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord.

Mama just hung her head and said,
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."
"Hey, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

Ugh

Hey Mama, I heard Papa called himself a jack of all trades.
Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave?
Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal to pay his bills.
Hey Mama, folks say that Papa was never much on thinking.
Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama looked up with a tear in her eye and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone. (Well, well, well, well)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone, lone, lone, lone, alone."
"Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

"I said, Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

CS Mama was a rock (daddy was a rolling stone)

Six days a week daddy drove a big rig
Burnin up the open road
No matter what he hauled it was known by all Mama carried the heaviest load
Six hungry kids in a mobile home In a park outside of town
Can drive a woman semi crazy

Well.. Mama was a rock and daddy was a rolling stone
Daddy made a living, mamma made a loving home
Daddy kept the big wheels turning, Mamma kept the homefires burnin
Mama was a rock and daddy was a rolling stone

Many a times mamma word out our britches when we did something bad
Not once in our life did we hear her say, Just wait tillI tell your dad
Between the housework and bills and nursing ills, sometimes she looked fried
But she looked like a million dollars, when daddy rode in Saturday night

Well.. Mama was a rock and daddy was a rolling stone
Daddy made a living, mamma made a loving home
Daddy kept the big wheels turning, Mamma kept the homefires burnin
Mama was a rock and daddy was a rolling stone

Daddy kept the big wheels turning, Mamma kept the homefires burnin
Mama was a rock and daddy was a rolling stone
Mama was a rock and daddy was
a rolling stone

"Lost Highway" by Hank Williams Sr. Performed informally by Bob Dylan in the film "Don't Look Back". A good version by Leon Russell on "Hank Wilson's Back".

All great comment towards the words Rolling Stone,
however, Muddy got the tip of hat relative to the name of the band, as we all know...
