ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM SET TO KEYNOTE NEW MUSIC REPORTER CONVENTION IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, MARCH 14TH, 2003

Entertainment panels and speakers confirmed for all-day event

Hollywood, Calif. -- Feb. 14, 2003. New Music Reporter (www.newmusicreporter.com), a website whose mission is to connect talented, unsigned bands and singers with record industry talent-seekers, will hold its first New Music Reporter Convention on Friday March 14th, 2003, at the famed Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The main events will take place in the historic Blossom Room, where the first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 19, 1929. There will be related activities throughout the hotel, which is located on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7000 Hollywood Blvd., across the street from Grauman’s Chinese Theater, at the epicenter of the entertainment capital of the world.

NMR President William Beck says he started the website because he realized “how jaded the business is with respect to new artists and labels.” With today’s broadband technology facilitating the speedy handling of large audio and video files, he saw how this could be coupled with the database he and his staff had built as an independent record label, in their efforts on behalf of their band, The Syrups.

For this first NMR convention, the organizers have gathered a stellar line-up of talent:

Andrew Loog Oldham, the original record producer, manager and publicist of The Rolling Stones from 1963-1967, and now the author of two autobiographical books, Stoned and 2Stoned, is confirmed to fly in from his home in Bogota, Colombia, to give the keynote address and participate in the NMR event. Oldham co-founded the Immediate Records label, the first independent U.K.-based record label, and is still active in record production in 2003.

Roy Trakin, Senior Editor of the national music and radio trade magazine HITS, who has also penned biographies on Jim Carey, Tom Hanks and Sting, will be acting as host and panel moderator for the event. Trakin has a BA from Colgate and an MFA in Film Studies from Columbia University.

Oldham will deliver a brief keynote speech, after which Trakin will conduct an interview with him and involve the audience in a Q&A session. A second collaborative panel will also take place where Trakin will interact with music industry veterans including Ian Copeland, Gary Calamar and Nick Ferrara.

Copeland is the founder of the influential F.B.I. music booking agency, author of the autobiography, Wild Thing, and currently the owner of The Backstage Café in Beverly Hills. “Ian helped define rock for a generation. His belief in the Police, R.E.M., and a hundred other acts helped spawn the alternative music revolution that we’re experiencing today,” praised Joan Jett.

Calamar is on the staff of NPR radio affiliate KCRW-FM (89.9), and on Sunday nights he hosts “The Open Road” program from 8-11 p.m. Along with Thomas Golubic, Gary Calamar operates the film and television music supervision company, SuperMusicVision. Their soundtrack collection for the HBO original series, “Six Feet Under,” has just been nominated for a Grammy.

New York-based entertainment attorney Ferrara facilitated the signing of the band RATT by Atlantic Records in 1983, and RATT went on to record platinum-selling albums for the label. The law firm of Serling, Rooks & Ferrara, LLP, represents recording artists, producers, songwriters, marketing, promotion, production and record companies, managers and booking agencies. Nick’s current clients include The Corrs, Creed, D-12, Drowning Pool, Vanessa Carlton, Chevelle, and Trust Company.

Legendary music-maker Geoff Emerick, best known for his ground-breaking work with The Beatles, has also been confirmed to attend the conference. He engineered Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road. He’s also engineered and produced Paul McCartney on more than a dozen albums, and his expertise can be heard on albums by The Zombies, Badfinger, Robin Trower, America, Art Garfunkel and Elvis Costello, to name a few. Emerick is currently producing L.A. band The Syrups.

The schedule for the day’s events will be:
10:00-11:00 am - Registration
11:00-12:15 pm - Andrew Loog Oldham: Keynote address, discussion with Roy Trakin, Q&A session.
12:15-1:00 pm - Lunch break.
(Buffet style food, catered by the hotel, will be available all day in the Blossom Room.)
1:00-2:30 pm - Panel discussion: Ian Copeland, Gary Calamar, Nick Ferrara. Moderator Roy Trakin.
2:30 pm to end - Industry A&R personnel interact and mingle with bands and artists. Private meetings and presentations may be held in available conference rooms or suites. One-on-one discussions with panelists may be arranged in a hospitality suite. Additionally, participating talent is being encouraged to arrange showcase gigs in surrounding clubs throughout the weekend, and interested A&R reps. will be notified in their convention materials.

Participants may reserve table space to present their materials to attendees for $125 per band or artist (NMR members $75). Interested members of the public as well as artists not yet ready to present their act to the industry may attend the event, enjoy the keynote and panel appearances, meet the participating artists and see their materials for an admission fee of $25 in advance, or $35 at the door. For more convention or venue details, or to register, please visit www.newmusicreporter.com or call toll-free (800) 513-3111. All-day valet parking is available for $7.00 at the hotel.

“Through my experience as co-founder and President of an independent record company, and the development and marketing of the independent band, The Syrups, over the past 3 years,” Beck explains, “I realized there are a lot of talented bands in the world that should be heard by as many people as possible. To be successful, a talented band needs financial backing and the proper creative production and direction for their music. New Music Reporter was created and designed to connect these bands with the people they need to reach in order to develop and market their music and to become successful. It seemed so obvious. The industry is looking for new talent, and new talent is looking for the industry. We facilitate the process, in what we hope is an entertaining and meaningful way.”
