Here's one you might not know...but you should.
Mick Collins of Gories/Screws/Blacktop/Dirtbombs fame. He's the baddest, blackest, mofo to holler the rockin' gospel this side of hades in quite some time.
Lemmy from Motorhead kicks ass.
Anthony Keidis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers can rock out with his cock out and get a crowd goin' with the best of 'em.
Iggy is...well Iggy, 'nuff said. I think he needs to put a shirt on though.
Joe Strummer used to be an atomic bomb of a frontman.
Lux Interior is maniacal. The Cramps once did a show at an insane asylum in the Napa Valley. If you didn't see Lux come onto the stage with the band...you wouldn't have been able tell him from the residents of the asylum.
Honestly, there's lots of really good frontmen/women out there. The above mentioned are just some of my faves. As always, your mileage may vary. |

What about Wendy O. Williams??
Not into her music but she used to scare the hell out of me everytime a video of hers used to come up on TV. |

I roadied for W.O.W. once. She was playing at a club in York that I roadied at from time to time. She was great fun, and actually quite smart. The funniest part of the whole thing was that just before she was to go one, she started acting like she was ripped. She actually had to be helped to the stage. Then for the next 90 minutes or so, she went on a drunken rampage. They literally carried off the stage after she apparently passed out. 2 minutes later in the dressing room, she was fine.
Wendy always put on "the show". And always used black electrician's tape as a bikini top. |

Can't believe no one's mentioned David Bowie - he's the only performer I've seen who comes close to Mick in the "charismatic rock star" category. Close, but no cigar - in my view, there has never been a better front man than Mick Jagger. This is a pretty interesting list of also-rans, but as Bob Dylan once said:
All these people that you mentioned
Yes I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rerarrange their faces
And give them all another name
(Actually, half of these people are NOT lame, but it's just such a good quote)
Of the people mentioned above who I've seen, I WILL say that Iggy is in a category all by himself. He's fucking INCREDIBLE, in fact. A lot of these people, though, just stand there and sing - they're good SINGERS, but they're not really front men. Daltrey, for instance, and Robert Plant. And there are a lot of people mentioned here who I LOVE - Joe Strummer and Johnny Rotten, certainly - but no one comes close to Mick. Every time I've seen the Stones - 20 times so far - I've walked out convinced that I've just seen the greatest entertainer on the planet.
Speaking of Wendy O Williams (I believe it was suicide, by the way), I saw the Plasmatics about 1980 in a little theater in Scranton or Wilkes Barre or some godforsaken coaltown - when they started, I walked up to the stage to get some pictures, and when I did, everyone else rushed the stage and I got pinned there the whole show. Wendy was about a half inch away from my outstretched arm, rubbing whipped cream and dirt all over herself. I got some tremendous pictures of that show - which was basically awful, just complete sensory overload. She sawed a Les Paul in half, and they blew up some amps and left the rest feeding back when they left. My ears were ringing for a week.
I wouldn't put her in any lists of best anything, except maybe Best Ex-Porn Stars Turned Punk Princesses, or Best Pink Mohawks. |

Good Call,
I knew Stiv. He grew up just two streets over from me.
I live in Girard, Ohio. He knew who I was when I was a kid.
He was friends with my Dad. They worked at the same mill together, Syro Steel. My Dad said he always used to tell the other guys at work how he was going to make it big in a rock outfit and they were like...yeah, yeah, sure.
I think The Dead Boys crush the Sex Pistols and The Misfits. I personally feel Young, Loud, and Snotty (now Younger, Louder, and Snottier)is the best punk album I have ever heard. They were the real deal.
