Does anybody knows what is the story behind Hand of Fate lyrics? It is something to do with Mick Jagger Ned Kelly "experience"?
Also, who plays the solo guitar?
Thanks

The hand of fate is on me now
It picked me up and it knocked me down
I'm on the run, I'm prison bound
The hand of fate is heavy now
I killed a man, I'm highway bound
The wheel of fortune keeps turning round
Turning round, turning round
I should have known it was a one-horse town
Cause my sweet girl was once his wife
And he had papers that the judge had signed
The wind blew hard, it was a stormy night
He shot me once but I shot him twice
The hand of fate is on me now
It picked me up and it kicked me right down
Kicked me right down, kicked me right down
I had to save her life
Yeah, I gunned him twice
Yeah and I watched him die, watch out boy
Yeah, I watched him die
He was a barroom man, the violent kind
He had no love for that gal of mine
And then one day in a drinking bout
He swore he'd throw me right out of town
The hand of Fate is on me now
I shot that man, I put him underground
I put him underground, underground
Yes I did
I'm on the run, I hear the hounds
My luck is up, my chips are down
So goodbye baby, so long now
Wish me luck, I'm going to need it, child
The hand of fate is on me now
Yeah it's too late baby
I say it's too late baby, it's too late now
The hand of fate is on me now
Oh yeah
The hand of fate is heavy now
Don't you worry, don't you frown
Ah yeah
Watch out, boy
Ah yeah, come on
It's too late, it's too late now
The hand of fate is heavy now
It pick you up and it knock you down |

WAYNE PERKINS
Before he auditioned for Mick Taylor's replacement and recorded with the Stones in 1974-75, American guitarist Wayne Perkins had recorded with artists such as Albert King, the Everly Brothers, Lonnie Mack, Ronnie Milsap, P. F. Sloan, Bob Marley (1973's Catch a Fire) and Joni Mitchell (1974's Court and Spark). Perkins was the favorite candidate along with Ron Wood to get the job. He started contributing early on (1974) in the Black and Blue sessions, and wound up playing on songs like Fool to Cry, Memory Motel and Hand of Fate. Some of the work he recorded there also later wound up on Tattoo You (Slave, Worried About You).
Like Mandel, Perkins' career somewhat aborted after that disappointment. He did went on to play until the mid-1980s, forming a short-lived group called Crimson Tide and recording with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Levon Helm, Glenn Frey and the Oak Ridge Bo. |

Yeah, Mick is a demon in this song, especially in the line `` i should have known it was a one-horse town..``
Pay attention, he almost cries singing this bit, it`s beautiful. |

Not Hand of Fate...but...I was listening to some really old blues tunes the other day and one of the songs struck me as strange...I couldn't figure out where I had heard it before...it was as I finally figured out, part of the lyrics from Crazy Mama...of course...as this tune was penned in the 40s, I would say our boys got a little indulgent with this public domain tune |

For me, Mick nails it right before the solo: "I watched him die, watch out, boy!/Yeah, I watched him DIE! WHOO!" Then the solo, eh?
My personal favorite from the Licks tour was the Aragon version. That performance was all ups and downs, but this one was a definite up. Charlie starts the song too fast, but they settle into a nice groove, and Ronnie Wood reclaims his "King of the Six-String" mantle with his solo. Then Mick comes back in with "He was a barroom man..." and Ronnie hits this fucking awesome chord that rattles bones...
I think it's time to put on Black and Blue, don't you? |
