Topic: Pay Your Dues -- That's a Violin??? Return to archive

buttergun I've been compiling my Stones boots and finally, after years, gave Pay Your Dues (aka Did Everybody Pay Their Dues) some attention. I have it from two sources -- the "Outtakes 1968-1974" bootleg compilation, and the Russia-released "Through the Past Darkly" CD, which apparently is an offical release, and, like all the other Russian CDs, includes bonus tracks, including Pay Your Dues. And by far the sound quality is better for this track on the Russian CD -- still not perfect, but not nearly as muddy as the other boot releases I've heard of Dues.

Anyway...so that screaming solo throughout this track is an electric violin? It sounds so much like a lead guitar. This might again be the sound quality, but still...I find it hard to believe it's a violin. Does anyone know of an even better source for this track, where you can tell for sure?

Regardless, I still prefer Street Fighting Man, but that screaming instrument (whatever it is) in Pay Your Dues adds a certain extra something...too bad they removed it from SFM's mix.

Honky Tonk Man I have always wondered about the guitar too. It’s an awesome solo and would love to know more about it. I too don’t believe it to be an electric violin.
