Sir Stonesalot Once Upon A Time In Mexico. Crap. Avoid this one.

The story has already been done to death, and this movie brings nothing new to the table. The plot is impossibly retarded. Except for Johnny Depp, the acting is awful. Even as good as Johnny was, he couldn't save his character from being lame. The action sequences were ridiculous. The best thing I can say about this movie is that it isn't quite as bad as.....

Open Range. Crap. Avoid this one.

The only good thing about this movie is the big gunfight. Unfortunately, you have to sit through 95 minutes of crap to get to it. Then you have another 20 minutes of bullshit to watch AFTER the gunfight. This was a 135 minute movie that seemed like 5 hours. FPM called it "ham fisted". That is a pretty good description for the directing...and acting. Obviously, Costner and Duvall gradutaed with honors from the Bill Shatner School Of Overstated Acting. Even with all the overacting they were STILL boring! The one thing they got right was everyone was covered in filth. Very befitting for Hollywood crap like this piece of shit.

All was not lost though as I also saw....

Lost In Translation. Very good, a must see.

This movie deserves all the recognition that is being heaped on it. It is really funny. Bill Murray was perfect for this flick, and if he would win an Oscar, I wouldn't be able to argue against it. Sophia Coppola did a great job directing. She really brought out the isolation that the characters found themselves in. But the best thing about this movie is that it shows what can be done on a small budget, without big studio backing. I'm sure some people will think the movie as boring...or pretentions...or "arty". All I can say is that if that's what they think, then they missed the whole point of the film.

Rent or buy this one, and thank me later.

Martha I'll thank you now, Stonesy. I knew the Costner film sucked, and avoided it like I do all his films these days. Box Office Poisin is what they used to call it!

I have yet to catch LIT...but plan to when it comes close to us........or is released on DVD..whichever comes first.

Caught "Monster" this week. Great acting job by Charlize. She co-produced the film taking no salary and instead put that money back into the film. It is worth seeing, in my opinion. It isn't as bloody or graphic as I thought it might be...and focuses, moreso, on how childhood abuse affected both Aileen and her lover Selby. The film shows how childhood abuse continues to be perpetuated in adulthood, is progressive...and in Aileen's case, ultimately fatal.

Check it out.

FPM C10 I can't say enough BAD about "Open Range" , and can't say enough GOOD about "Lost In Translation".

Why in the FUCK do they keep letting Kevin Costner make films? WHY?? I REALLY want to know. They could've made several GOOD films for the money this cost.

This fucking thing is just horrible. I felt bad for Robert Duval, because HE at least is capable of better. The only thing on HIS resume that could possibly be lower than this turkey would be his ill-advised portrayal of Robert E. Lee in "Gods and Generals". And this movie is in THAT category, just not quite as long. It seems a lot longer than it is. As far as showing the old west as being covered in crap, that's been done before. See "Unforgiven" and "Dead Man" and leave "Open Range" out on the open range for the buzzards to pick - although I doubt even carrion eaters would touch this carcass.

Stones content in Lost in Translation: Scarlett Johansson's asshole boyfriend, a rock photographer, complains that they dress every young band up in "Keith Richards clothes".

I just absolutely loved this film - I've always liked Bill Murray, although I can do without most of the films he's famous for. His performance in this one had such an incredible balance between being gut-wrenchingly hilarious but having an underlying bone-deep sadness - he really deserves an Oscar for this and it would be great if he got one.

Sophia Coppola - well, I guess genius is genetic. Is "The Virgin Suicides" anywhere near this good? I must admit the title put me off, but now I feel like I have to see that one too.

02-07-04 01:42 PM
LadyJane Virgin Suicides was very dark and disturbing..but well worth watching.

I think you would like it FPM...

Ms. Coppola has come a long way from playing Mary Corleone in Godfather 3.

I did buy ESCORT today.
02-07-04 04:34 PM
gypsy I HATED "Lost in Translation," SS. Hated it. Therefore, the chances of you getting into my pants are slim and none.
I did like Sofia's "Virgin Suicides" a lot.
02-07-04 05:28 PM
fmk438j See Virigin Suicides if only for the coolest character name ever - 'Trip Fontaine'.

OK so the book actually came up with the name, but I only saw it through the movie.

I like Scarlett Johanson. Something different and slightly off beat about her. Very medatitive.

Nasty Habits The question is why do smart film literate guys like y'all continue to go see Kevin Costner movies, boosting the numbers and perpetuating the system? DAMN, y'all! A'course that shit is bad!

Once Apon a Time in Mexico was a dreadful disappointment not to mention a mind rattling numbing incoherent mess.

Of the movies I saw this week --

Lost in Translation was a really good movie. What was wrong with it, Gypsy? Have yet to hear a negative take on it and would love to hear one.

American Splendor was an interesting movie, but I wasn't as thoroughly taken with it as I thought I might have been, considering how much I like the (older) issues of the comic book. I enjoyed its meta-meta-meta-movie games to a certain extent but I thought they sacrificed the film at the core to its cleverness.

The movie I saw this week that I completely hated was Thirteen.

02-07-04 06:04 PM
mac_daddy watch Whale Rider

she deserves the Oscar, imho

actually going to see LOTR at the cinerama dome right now...
02-07-04 06:08 PM
gypsy Nasty, I thought it was so extremely boring...the dialogue...I never felt any kind of connection between the two characters...nothing...everything about it was so boring...I just wanted it to end (kind of like sex w/ Joey).
Now, what did you like about it?
02-07-04 06:19 PM
Joey " Lost In Translation. Very good, a must see. "

The film sucked !!! After the movie finished , I said to my girlfriend , " Well , there's another 142 minutes out of my life that I will never get back ! "

A complete disaster -- Murray didn't even nail the chick at the end ...........avoid this one like the plague ( especially since it is filmed in Japan and I don't care what people say , I STILL think some of them Japanese are secretly Viet Cong .................................and you ?!?! )

Jacky Cong !

02-07-04 06:31 PM
gypsy Thank you, Joey.
142 minutes?
It seemed longer.

Lil Brian I thought "Lost in Translation" was awesome. A must see.
But what the hell do I know?
02-07-04 06:42 PM
Lil Brian I guess I liked in the final scene how you couldn't hear what was said and were left to draw your own conclusion. Pretty cool ending.
You also didn't think it was possible, early on, for those two to make a connection, but I felt they really did.
Great acting by both too. Murray's come a long way since Caddyshack.
02-07-04 06:58 PM
gypsy Actually, I would have rather watched Caddyshack.
02-07-04 07:11 PM
Lil Brian Gypsy,
I liked Caddyshack too. "It's in da' hole!"
02-08-04 05:06 AM
Sir Stonesalot Boring. Yeah, no shit.

You don't think that Sophia had to convey just how lost, bored, and lonely our main characters were? So bored and alone that they find a deep kinship with each other? Boredom was a very intricate part of this film. I mean, I actually felt the sleep deprivation that the characters were feeling. You say it was boring...I say it was plot development.

What was wrong with the dialogue? It struck me as how people actually talk...especially people who don't really know each other very well. And the interaction with the Japanese...man that stuff was gold! I mean, the whole scene with the "Japanese Johnny Carson"....and the photo shoot...that was really hilarious stuff! And how refreshing is it that they never fuck? Or that you can't hear the most important line in the movie!

My dearest Gypsy...since you have so obviously missed the entire point of this movie...I would say the chances of YOU getting in MY pants is nil....not the other way around. Besides, we both know that you'll want me again just as soon as I put up another one of my undeniably intelligent, and uniquely brilliant posts. You can't help it...you are a sucker for a guy with a big brain and massive wit.

And Joey...you may NOT touch my monkey, and I doubt that you will be able to touch the Monkey's monkey either. You will just have to settle for touching your own monkey....again.

Zeeta Re Bill Murray - Ground Hog Day rocks\!!!

Strange_Stray_Cat How about "Lost in transition"?
02-08-04 05:35 PM
Joey " Thank you, Joey.
142 minutes?
It seemed longer "

Amen My Princess ................................

I haven't yawned that many times in 142 minutes since I listened to those " Jeff Beck Starter Kits " somebody burned for me a few years ago .

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

Lost in Translation is an abysmal flick that Murray walks through like he's there for a paycheck . Please don't see this putrid , turgid , turbid mess of a movie and thank me later .

" Carly is a Lesbian who does tons of Blow at work Ronnie "

Hacky !
02-08-04 08:41 PM
gypsy Get off your high horse, SS. I get what you're saying...I know what Sofia was trying to get across to the audience...and I do find it very refreshing that the two main characters did not have sex. I still think the movie is fucking boring and dull and I don't want to see it again.
I know you're smart and witty...you know you're smart and witty. You also know you're an asshole--which I find refreshing. Howver, KeepRigid is far wittier than you...and I'd like to get into his pants.

sammy davis jr. I saw Lost In Translation this weekend too....I liked it very much. I'd rather a film's dialogue make me feel something rather than a bunch of the usual big budget effects and smash em ups.
I also saw Bruce Almighty.....rather the usual Jim Carrey fluff. I really DON'T get or like this guy much. He's just like the guy in school who cries for attention all the damn time.
Aso saw a good documentary on HBO called "Kennel Dogs". The fact I HATE dogs did not make me dislike this moving documentary. Made me actually feel a little love for our own neurotic mutt. Just for a minute.
02-09-04 12:57 AM
Sir Stonesalot Hell no I'm not getting offa my high horse! It's too much fun way up here!

Besides...it's a long way down, and a real pain in the ass to crawl all the way back up again.

I like Keep. He/She is one of the great Rocks Off characters. But He/She ain't getting in my pants either.

Joey...you said Murray looked like he was sleepwalking his way through the movie. Did you ever stop to consider that that is exactly what his character was supposed to be doing?

Duh.

I feel exactly the same way, although not entirely for his movies. I've seen him in interviews and he just never drops that manic bursting in your face thing. Which really is annoying when the interviewer is trying for seriousness for half an hour and he's still goofing off, never with a straight answer and always trying to get an angle or laugh out of every sentence.

Just like those attrocious Robin Williams interviews (on Parkinson for example) where all he does is a stand up routine with the odd lame and oh-so staged prompt by the 'interviewer'. Just makes you feel like screaming SHUT THE FUCK UP.
02-09-04 01:07 AM
gypsy Sammy, there's something wrong with people who don't like dogs. Yeah, I know about the whole dialogue thing...I just didn't find this movie's dialogue interesting...I didn't feel a connection between the two main characters...didn't feel it. Maybe I'm just stupid...not intellectual enough to 'get it.' Fuck it. I don't care. The movie was fucking dull...and those freakin' Japs got on my nerves. The funniest Asian on TV lately was that "She Bangs" guy on American Idol. Now that was comedy at it's finest.
joey, don't you think Murray should do something about his acne scars? I bet joshy has a great dermatologist in Florida.
