Mick, Baz, Joan hit town
By Gemma Jones
February 14, 2003
MICK Jagger grabbed a taste of Sydney nightlife last night, joined by film producer Baz Lurhmann and American comedian Joan Rivers for dinner at the Bondi Icebergs.
Jagger and fellow rocker Charlie Watts, emerged with Lurhmann after midnight and were ushered to a waiting black Mercedes by minders.
Rivers said she had a wonderful dinner with the rockers.
"Thanks to collagen my lips are bigger than Mick's," Rivers joked to staff. It was great to be with Baz and Mick."
The group was whisked away to Lurhmann's home to finish off the evening.
Rivers said it was nice of Jagger to pick up the bill but quickly corrected herself.
"He didn't, he's forgotten that I was pre-Jerry," Rivers quipped about Jagger's former wife Jerry Hall.
Hotel management said the stars enjoyed their meals and had no problems.
"We've served them all, everyone has eaten here," owner Maurizio Terzini said after the stars had left.
The Icebergs was until recently known as a watering hole for leather-skinned, beer-swilling locals.
But it has undergone a major refurbishment to transform it into one of Sydney's trendier restaurants.
Tim Bott, manager of the Icebergs, seemed eager to talk about the evening, but was coy about giving details about his "mild-mannered, gentle" celebrity guests.
"They seemed to enjoy themselves," he said.
After they arrived, "the vibe picked up a bit".
The stars enjoyed a selection of high-class but hearty Australian food 500gm rib-eye steaks, kingfish fillet with a sauce of pippis and sliced raw beef.
"They ate and drank the best that we have to offer . . . there's no fish and chips on the menu," said Mr Bott.
