stonedinaustralia Drunk-driving diva Diana Ross jailed

AFP - Pop diva Diana Ross has been sentenced to two days in jail and ordered to undergo alcohol abuse counselling after pleading no contest to drink driving in the US state of Arizona.

The conviction and jail stint for Ross, 59, came after she was arrested in Tucson, Arizona on December 30, 2002 and was found to have more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

Tucson Magistrate Jay Cranshaw ordered the rhythm and blues superstar to spend 48 hours behind bars in Los Angeles.

She must serve out her sentence at an undisclosed prison by March 9.

"Miss Ross pleaded no contest to a charge of DUI (driving under the influence)" and was sentenced to two days in a Los Angeles County jail, court spokesman Mannie Urbina said.

After pleading no contest by telephone from New York, the former Supreme was also fined $US852 ($A1,110), sentenced to one year's unsupervised probation and 36 hours of alcohol abuse counselling, the official said.

The recording legend was picked up by a police patrol in the early hours of December 30 they received a report of a car swerving and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Police reports indicated that Ross was unable to walk a straight line during a field sobriety test, and fell down laughing while trying to stand on one leg.

Police film was released showing the diva tottering and giggling as she tried to walk a straight line.

Because of her high blood-alcohol level, Ross was also charged with extreme DUI, another misdemeanour. Under a plea agreement, the charge of extreme DUI was dropped, prosecutor Ron Beran said.

The singer's representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Ross is the former lead singer of the Supremes, a Motown group that won fame with hits including Stop! In the Name of Love and You Can't Hurry Love.

In May 2002, Ross halted her 14-date, 10-city North American concert tour to enter a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Malibu, California. The tour was eventually cancelled.

Her drink driving arrest was not her first brush with the law.

In September 1999, she was detained for about five hours in London over an alleged assault on a female security guard at Heathrow Airport.

She was released after being cautioned.
