Wed Feb 12,10:57 AM ET

(2/12/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- Bob Dylan has appeared in films such as Pat Garrett (news) & Billy The Kid, Renaldo & Clara, Hearts Of Fire, and Backtrack, and now his own story could be headed for a movie theater near you. Writer-director Todd Haynes (news), whose credits include Velvet Goldmine, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter (news) Story, and Far From Heaven, is planning a "fictional drama" based on Dylan's life.

Haynes tells Entertainment Weekly that he's preparing to start writing the script for the film, explaining, "It will draw from his life, but it will refract who he is into a cluster of characters played by different actors who will be him, but none of them him...It's the only way to tackle his multiplicity."

Haynes says he hasn't yet spoken with Dylan, but that the singer-songwriter's manager has told Haynes that the project has Dylan's blessing, as well as permission to use his music.

Dylan kicks off a two-week tour of Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday (February 11) in Brisbane.

This guy is an excellent director.
