As one of France's national treasures, nobody was expecting Yves Saint Laurent to retire quietly.

But his final couture show was an extravaganza beyond anyone's wildest dreams. More than 300 outfits, immaculately preserved, charted the designer's greatest hits over four decades.

Jerry Hall stole the show in a white satin gown and billowing ostrich-trimmed cloak. Naomi Campbell dazzled in a short green fur coat, while Claudia Schiffer made a rare appearance on the catwalk in a beige safari suit.

Jerry gives it a whirl...

The clothes are available on order until July, when the house closes forever. Lauren Bacall, Bianca Jagger, Hubert de Givenchy, Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier turned up to pay their respects at the Pompidou Centre.

Come the finale the audience was on its feet, hankies dabbing at eyes as though someone had died. He was the last of his kind.
