Topic: Stones "Supporting" Bands Return to archive
02-08-03 03:06 PM
telecaster One of many things you have to admire about The Stones is they have never backed off from having a "good" backup band.

I am sure the tradition goes back to the later 50's and
early 60's when there were many bands on the bill and I am glad that only The Stones could keep that tradition alive

For me by being a Stones fan I have seen the following,
some good and some not so good:

1. Peter Tosh
2. Journey
3. Southside Johnny
4. ZZ Top
5. Lenny Kravitz
6. Johnny Lang
7. Buddy Guy
8. Pretenders
9. Ryan Adams
10. Fabulous Thunderbirds
11. Goo Goo Dolls
12. Wide Mouth Mason. In Milwaukee. I will never forgive them for that one. Michael Cohl trying to promote some upstart Canadian band. In an interview Keith said "I have
no idea who they are"

Gazza I've seen the following bands open for the Stones - in order:

1. The Chieftains
2. George Thorogood & the Destroyers
3. J. Geils Band
4. Gun
5. Dan Reed Network
6. Bon Jovi
7. The Black Crowes
8. Big Country
9. Eric Lapointe (sp?) (French artist who opened in Paris'98)
10. The Goo Goo Dolls *
11. Sheryl Crow (7 times in all in 1999 AND 2002)
12. The Pretenders **

* missed them in Hartford,Ct 1999 due to pre-show partying
** missed them at MSG'02 due to YOTI pre-show commitments and only saw the last 2 songs at Giants

Best opening act : Sheryl
worst : Bon Jovi, followed by the Black Crowes

purrcafe Journey
George Thorogood
Living Color
Blues Traveler
Foo Fighters
Fiona Apple
The Corrs
Johnny Laing
Pretenders

Fiona Apple and the Corrs were the strongest, Journey was the weakest (had the gall to thank the crowd for "making us America's number one band." Didn't go over very well.

F505 robin trower and kokomo opened in 1976 in zuiderpark The Haque, 2 now totally forgotten acts and o yes if i'm not mistaken our local "comic" hero Andre van Duin opened the famous Kurhaus concert in 64 when the audience tore the place to pieces

Yeah, remember their Atari 2600 video game circa 1983. The premise and ad promo: "Help Journey escape from their fans!"

PUUUUULEEEASE!

69 Chevy Wow great post that brings back lots of memories! Peter Tosh at JFK Stadium in Philly(my first concert)walking on stage with a giant hand rolled something or other and launching into "Legaize It". 1981 when Journey thanked the crowd for making them #1! That didn't sit well with the Stones fans who proceeded to hurl anything they could find at the stage until Steve Perry ran for his life. That was the first of 2 shows in Philly and on day 2 Perry decided to keep his mouth shut between songs and got through the set unscathed.
