Ten Thousand Motels LYDON BLASTS LATE CLASH ROCKER

JOHN LYDON has slammed late punk contemporary JOE STRUMMER as a hypocrite for preaching a socialism while living a posh lifestyle.

The SEX PISTOLS icon - also known as JOHNNY ROTTEN - claims THE CLASH star Strummer used his endorsement of a concert series organised by anarchist group CLASS WAR to feed his ego.

He says, "Joe Strummer, God bless him, he's gone and he shall be missed. But how dare he preach class war with an organisation like that (the late '80s Rock Against the Rich movement).

"Living in a huge house in Holland Park (west London). Every photo opportunity to be seen on a bus in his leather jacket and then he went back to a palace. You're not getting it quite right there! That's where his image mattered more to him than the reality. He was trying to con us. In a nice way and for the right reasons but once you start lying, it carries on and on and on."

Saint Sway so what? The Pope lives in a big house too. It doesnt change his intentions.

Strummer had ideals. Whats wrong with that?

he also was an amazing talent. Lydon has zero talent and should zip it.
February 2nd, 2006 11:47 AM
glencar Zero talent? I disagree with his statement but he's still somewhat talented.

glencar Public Image Limited had its moments. Now before you get started, no, they didn't outrock the Stones but that one CD had some good songs. As did the Sex Pistols.

Yes !!!
Strummer wins the talent war with a "no contest".
Funny thing is, Lydon, although no fault of his own, was all image in the sEx Pistols. Malcolm McClaren molded that band and it had nothing to do with music or ideals. It was a show and alot of PR. We're lucky that we got some cool music out of them...
February 2nd, 2006 12:05 PM
glencar Oh, I agree with Strummer have much more talent. Don't let PussySway steer you the wrong way.
February 2nd, 2006 12:07 PM
The Wick Is Lydon one to talk after that Pistols reunion tour which was purely for financial reasons?
February 2nd, 2006 12:34 PM
Saint Sway GlenCar,

I asked you to explain how Lydon has any shred of talent.

Not what records you like.

So you like the 1st PIL record. Great. Doesnt mean Lydon has any talent! You can like the Monkees albums but dont tell me that means they were talented.

I say Lydon has ZERO talent. You disagree. OK. Please explain...
February 2nd, 2006 12:47 PM
lotsajizz Lydon has more talent under his left pinky nail on a Tuesday than Strummer ever had in his lifetime. One was a follower....talented, mind you, but a follower...no Rotten

and Joe's solo stuff blew donkey dongs, his death made them no more listenable

PussySway, see the post in between. Talent isn't something that can be quantified. It's a matter of taste. When you get some, email me. Until then, blow off.

The Pope is a Nazi. He tried to kill American and British and Canadian soldiers during WWII. He sucks. He's a scumbag.

But I agree, he has a huge house. I've been there. Its fucking huge. Those guys must have ripped off a lot of people, including a lot of murdered Jews, to build a fucking estate like that. The Pope is a very, very wealthy Nazi. Very wealthy. His company has billions of dollars, and one hell of a fucking PR department. I'll give him credit for that.

I don't recall Johnny EVER calling himself a socialist, but they certainly couldn't have made TOO much money from either of the reunion tours they did. I'm glad they did them, though, so I got the chance (two chances actually) to see a great band play great songs.

Although this slagging of Joe by Johnny seems to be fairly slight and further softened by faint praise, it brings to mind the last bout of Johnny vs Joe badmouthing -- when Johnny said that Joe would've accepted the Clash's induction into the R&R Hall of Fame instead of spitting on it like a good punk should. He further said that the Pistols would bever be inducted but if they were he would have no part of it. Now that the Pistols HAVE been announced to be in the next batch of inductees, I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing if he puts his filthy lucre where his green teeth are and blows a snot rocket in the direction of Cleveland.

Glencar and Saint Sway - take it from one who knows, nobody gives a sh t about your personal squabbles. However, have you tried calling the other guy a pussy ® ? That never fails.

I see no posts where you even attempt to explain Lydon's talents or ability.

glencar wrote:

thats not even slightly true.
so you think talent is subjective?

tal·ent ( t?l ' ?nt ) n. A marked innate ability, as for artistic accomplishment.
See synonyms at ability.

to have talent is to have a special ability, a skill. Talent isn't a matter of personal taste!

glencar wrote:

you've resulted to calling me a "pussy" and yet you still have the nerve to acuse me of not having taste. Check yourself.

I guess we can add 'taste' to the growing list of things you don't understand.

Bingo! There it is! The classic GlenCar sign off when you've been backed into a corner and have nothing intelligent to say.

you've claimed you know how to discuss music outside of just stating the Stones songs you like. Well, I've given you a forum here to intelligently discuss the musical talent of an artist you like. Yet, all you still come up with is: "I like this record." and 3rd Grade name calling and further proof that you have the a chick pea for a brain.

JuanTCB Lydon not talented?

Great lyricist. Great performer. Great ability to convey a meaning of a song through anger, sarcasm, brutal honesty, and humor. Broke tons of new musical ground with the first couple of PiL albums. One of rock's all-time great frontmen, in my opinion (and a belated happy 50th to Mr. Rotten, by the way).

Don't believe all the Malcom McLaren hype. The whole Great Rock N' Roll Swindle mythology was just self-promotion from Malcom. He was their manager, and he & his wife (the now-famous Vivienne Westwood) did influence their look somewhat, but the sound, the songs, and the personality were all from the band members themselves. Saying Malcom orchestrated the Pistols is like saying that Andrew Oldham orchestrated the Stones. It's a generalization and simply not true. Rent "The Filth And The Fury" or check out Lydon's autobiography for the real story.

As for the reunion tour being all about the money - of course it was! And they made no bones about it, which I thought was kind of refreshing (hell, they even called it the "Filthy Lucre" tour - how much more blatant could they be?). It would have been transparent and hypocritical if they said they were doing it for any other reason.

Really, the only one who was talentless and bought into the whole image was Sid (who died 27 years ago today, coincidentally) - he became nothing more than a cartoon character once he joined the band.

Exactly. I agree with every stinkin' syllable. Extra points for not infringing on ANY intellectual property copyrights while expressing these absolutely on-the-money thoughts.

Joseph, did you know that Black Phil Lynott used to party backstage with Keith Moon during The Who Put The Boot In Tour? The used to get completely ass-bashed on Irish Car Bombs (shot of Baileys in a Guinness).
