glencar That's under 100,000 per album. Kind of slack, no?
01-30-04 12:21 PM
Monkey Woman Probably because not many people have SACD players yet. And there's probably the "too much choice so I'll buy nothing" factor. 22 albums released at once is enough to confuse all but the dedicated fans!

mac_daddy curious - does anybody have any idea how these sales compared to the Dylan reissues (which were hybrid SACDs too)..?

how many units sold of the SACD release of DSOTM...?

taken together, those #s might give a more thourough indication of where the market is at for these things, and how the Stones are selling when compared to similar products put out by artists of comparable stature...

curious.

Dan Since they came out at the same time I was buying lots of concert tickets, I didnt get too many. Bought a few off half and traded CDs out of my private collection for some. Finally ordered most of the rest with the recent Tower sale.

Dylan Enjoying Sales Storm

Classic albums reissues posting hefty numbers

Bob Dylan

Bringing it all back home

In one of the record-business surprises of the fall, an ambitious series of remastered Bob Dylan albums is selling big. New hybrid Super Audio Compact Disc versions of fifteen classic discs -- including Highway 61 Revisited, Blood on the Tracks and Blonde on Blonde -- have sold close to 60,000 copies since their release in early-October, including sales at online stores such as Amazon.com. A limited-edition box that includes all fifteen discs has also sold more than 3,000 copies -- a big number for a set that retails for $240.

The Dylan albums have no bonus tracks or other new music; it's the quality of the new mixes that's the draw. Fans have long complained about the subpar quality of the CD versions of Dylan's albums. For those who already own SACD players, the audio quality of the new discs is astounding: You can even hear the sound of Dylan's cuff link hitting his guitar on "Shelter From the Storm," from Blood on the Tracks. "There's a whole new generation discovering Bob," says Jeff Jones, senior vice president of Sony Legacy, who says the label has shipped 750,000 of these reissues to stores worldwide.

Gazza >That's under 100,000 per album. Kind of slack, no?

For albums that have been released several times over (including previously on CD) I'd say thats a pretty incredible figure. I wouldnt have expected sales to have been a quarter of that amount to be honest.

As posted earlier, they were released to coincide with the tour. Whilst ive been impressed with what I've heard, my money went on concert tickets (and flights & hotels!) instead, and so far I've only bought two or three of these reissues (I dont own a SACD player and in some cases this is about the 3rd or 4th time I've bought these albums in varying formats..there's a limit!).. I'll buy them in sales in bits and pieces over time. I still dont even own all the Virgin reissues of the Rolling Stones Records catalogue!

Well, the Stones reissues did pretty well since this is the level of the competition!
