Jane Wyman (2) |
It is obvious that certain songs played life don't have the magic of the studio versions: undercover, almost hear you sigh, anybody see my baby... but on the other hand some songs grow when performed life: mixed emotions, out of control... Who can give me a clue? |

Song that can't cut it live: Bitch -- they just can't get that studio grind.
Song that was designed to be played live and the studio version is castrated: Tumblin Dice --I listened to Disc 1 of HandSome Goils last night and they fucking nail it. NAIL IT I tell you.
I thank the good Cardinal every fucking time I listen to that CD. More chiba for him! |

It's Only Rock N' Roll always rocks way better live to me than the studio version. |

Respectable doesn't have the same groove live. And I agree: Bitch is a lot better on Sticky Fingers.
By the way: what happened to Jane Wyman (1)?

They haven't been able to do Bitch live for years, but if you listen to the version on Rocks Off! from Perth, 1973 -- that version is one of the greatest live rock and roll recordings in history. "Aaah, come on Charlie won't you hit it hard! Too solid for me . . ."
"Out of Control", "Flip the Switch" and "Saint of Me" all really came into their own as live performances; a real joy considering how lame Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge songs sound live. . . .
And while I love "Tumbling Dice" live I really think to claim the studio version is "castrated" is a gigantic overstatement. It's perfection, I tell ya . . .
I guess the ultimate example of the Stones realizing a song live is "Midnight Rambler".

I think the studio version of Tumbling Dice is one of the 3-4 best ever Stones singles. Ive never tired of it and its always worked great live too....not sure quite what Handsome Girls version you mean - presumably the Fort worth show - however my fave live version has always been the one from the KBFH 78 recordings (I think its from Detroit - so it'll be elsewhere on "handsome girls"..the one where the intro goes on for ages..)
The live version of Midnight Rambler is maybe my fave Stones official release ever. Studio version is fine but doesnt compare to the live versions down the years
Heartbreaker was another song that worked better live - the 1973 versions of Dancin with Mr D are good too, whereas the studio version wouldnt frighten a 4 year old.
cant agree with IORR - for me,the studio version blows away any live version. Its belted out when played live, but theres a subtlety in the original which they just miss when played in concert. The way the guitars are mixed and meshed on the original are fantastic, beautifully understated playing. Listen to it on headphones and maybe you'll get what i mean..its hard to explain! The way the drums arent QUITE in time with the guitars (maybe half a beat difference) is a masterstroke...whether it was accidental or not |

Sympathy FTD, Miss You, and Rock & A Hard Place are way better live. |
