In 1967, The Rolling Stones appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The legendary host asked them to change the words to their song "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together." Singer Mick Jagger decided during the performance to mumble the actual lyrics.
i know i tend to be forgetful, but i seem to remember mick caving in to the establishment and going with the words "lets spend some TIME together" it was jim morrison i remember blantantly rebelling by refusing to change the words to "light my fire" |

You are right Jaxx. You can definately tell that Mick says "time" instead of "night", although he does roll his eyes in disgust.
Morrison venomously SPIT out the "girl we couldn't get much higher" lyric that Ed wanted to change. One of the best things Morrison ever did, IMO. |

How come the WHO never played " Ed Sullivan " ???????

Ed Sullivan |
I tell ya: because they're a bunch of stupid idiots with hairy fungus and no talents whatsoever. Long haired monkeys who can't count till ten. And have made bad, bad records. I forbid them to play one note in my shows. |

Sullivan wasnt too keen to have rock acts on his show to begin with
He initially refused to have Elvis on his show - and relented solely for ratings purposes. Same with the Stones and (I guess) The Doors. Strange seeing these "Ed sullivans rock n roll classics" reruns on Vh1 when the guy detested the genre and everything it stood for.
I guess maybe The Who werent a BIG enough singles act,Joey (They only ever had one top 10 US single to my knowledge - "I can see for miles")....what is maybe a more likely reason is that their stage act was too violent.
Ed probably saw that clip of them doing "My generation" on the Smothers Brothers show (as seen at the start of "the kids are alright" movie)and likely as not, shit his incontinence pants at the prospect of Moon The Loon blowing the entire theatre up. I think Townshend got his hair singed from one of the explosions at the end of the song that night. Sullivan would have keeled over & died if that had happened on HIS show! |
