Woman pimped teen sister for $35
By DEAN PRITCHARD, SUN MEDIA
The Winnipeg Sun
A 19-year-old woman who pimped out her teenage sister for beer money can't blame her crime on her "very tragic upbringing," a judge said yesterday.
"You don't need a good background or a bad background to know that is wrong -- you just need to be alive," said Judge Fred Sandhu. "The choice you make is in between your ears."
The woman -- who cannot be named to protect the identity of her sister -- has been in custody since her arrest Oct. 12. Sandhu sentenced her to time served and 30 months supervised probation.
Court heard the woman arranged for her then 17-year-old sister and another woman to have sex with a man for $35. The woman gave a portion of the money to her sister and spent the rest on beer, Crown attorney Terry McComb told court.
The victim "had trouble saying no to her sister and was afraid of her sister," McComb said.
In discussions with the Crown, the victim hinted there were other similar incidents but provided no details, McComb said.
The sisters had a troubled upbringing, including several incidents of sexual assault and exploitation beginning when they were pre-teens, court heard.
Originally from northern Manitoba, the accused was made a ward of Child and Family Services when she was 15 and moved to Winnipeg where she was placed on her own in a hotel, said defence lawyer Dan Manning.
A short time after her arrival, she was raped by several men who introduced her to crack, Manning said.
"At that point things spiraled out of control," Manning said.
The girl started working the streets and her life became an endless cycle of drugs and prostitution.
Sandhu urged the woman to take advantage of the services available to her while on probation and to seek help for her drug and alcohol problems.
"You've had a very tragic upbringing," Sandhu said. "That doesn't mean your future has to be as bad as your past."
