6th biggest selling 'catalogue' album in the ("Stones-hating") UK in 2007...and its a revamped version of a 32 year old compilation.

That'll REALLY inspire them to both get back into the studio and play loads of non-warhorses on the next tour..

andrews27 The old acoustic-electric blues-rock sound we appreciate in Beggars', Let it Bleed, Sticky, is best served by a warm and detailed production - a 'tube amp' production, if you will, fitting for end 60s-start 70s music. So the last three Stones albums rank this way sonically, to me:

B2B
VL
ABB

ABB reminds me of Tom Carson's review of Steel Wheels in the Village Voice back when. Carson says the sound on SW is cold, ringing and hollow, as if the Stones had resolved to skip the middleman and record the thing in a bank vault. (One of the best lines in the history of Stones reviews. Carson also reviewed the Stones at Giants Stadium in 1994, saying that Charlie played like he meant to scare the sky.)

gotdablouse Agreed, I've stopped listening to SW due its soulless production, couldn't get enought of it at the time though. Going back to...hum GHS, the only albums I always feel like picking up and playing are TY and B2B.

Any thoughts on my previous comments about the Stones needing some outside musicianship like they got on B2B and...TY come to think of it. Keith carried LIB but that was almost 40 years ago, damn...

Let's face it the Stones are not the greatest players on earth (well maybe Keith was for a few years between 69 and 72, GS anyone ?) and while it's nice to see Mick play the guitar it's pretty pedestrian and certainly doesn't elevate the tracks. Same problem on VL and ABB, but B2B had wonderful musicians like Wachtel (SOM anyone ?), Benmont Tench(AOM is a superb production) and even Billy Preston.

that's postin !!!
Been listening ot B2B after reading this brillant post and I totally agree with you.

AOM 's production with all the guitars is fantastic, like all the rockers...
ps: the opening drums on FTS kicks ass too!

CrissCrossMind 6. The Rolling Stones - Rolled Gold - The Very Best Of -

Why ask why I guess ... prefer a new B-sides to this one .. CCM
19th January 2008 06:19 AM
gotdablouse Actually I was quite fond of that that double LP, listened to it so many times while I was waiting for Undercover to come out in 1983! Might buy the CD version.

Mr.D
I read somewhere that ABB sold like 2.4m copies, is that correct?
19th January 2008 01:13 PM
glencar I was at Costco yesterday & they now have a 6 CD set of 5 classic Stones plus that Sympathy hip hop thing from 5 years back. I saw one for Rush also but I didn't look at that one as Rush really sucks.

Keith should have worked out his guitar parts a bit more carefully for ABB, although I think most of the guitars we can hear on ABB are Mick...whom we all know is a very average player, he said so himself! Oh wait did I forget Ronnie, sorry!
