Topic: Don Was talks about low sales of ABB Return to archive Page: 1 2

Soldatti What was it like working with the Rolling Stones, from Jerry Wexler, another music industry legend. And why was the album not successful?

“It's possible people don't want to hear any new music from the Rolling Stones. They don't have memories attached to it. Maybe they do just want to listen to Gimme Shelter. I suspect people just don't care about new music from them, but they certainly haven't lost interest in the Rolling Stones – they still buy tickets.”

Nellcote Thanks for the link.
I had to stop reading it, though, when Don Was was referred to as "music industry legend".
That's like saying I'm a Fantasy Fufillment Specialist...

Steel Wheels A Bigger Bang is such a great record. I love every lick, every note, everything about it.

gotdablouse They should have fired Was after the VL production fiasco, dull and boring.

I suspect Was is just like Leavell a yes-guy that makes these old dudes comfortable, especially Keith. Mick had his way on B2B (no friggin' Leavell) and Was in the background, a MUCH MORE exciting and better sounding album. ABB is really VL part II except Mick wrote most of the songs, on VL it was the contrary.

Steel Wheels On my stereo system, A Bigger Bang sounds better than VL and B2B. That's the beauty of music though. We all hear it different than the next cat!

Think of how much sense that would have made back then: The album sold 5 million copies worldwide, earned them their first Grammy, and was well-liked by critics. Some "fiasco." You may not dig the sound of it today -- I basically agree with you that it's "dull and boring," though I like most of the songs -- but at the time it was hardly cause for firing Was.

Plus, Was was directly involved on some of the best tracks on B2B: How Can I Stop, Too Tight. The stuff with Danny Saber and the Dust Brothers doesn't hold up nearly as well as the Was-produced tracks.
11th January 2008 04:49 PM
gotdablouse Good points, too bad VL sold then, it certainly didn't deserve to, at least not 10x what ABB sold, and to think Mick bitched about the sales of VL in that long RS interview in 95...I guess Was felt the axe was ready to fall during B2B so he outdid himself ;-) For all it's faults Goddess sounds "fresher" too than VL or ABB, but that's probably just me.

The more I think of it, the more I think they should call it a day recording new songs, it tarnishes their legend (SSMC anyone ?!) as much as these gazillion billion dollar tours. They've got nothing left to say, especially Keith, so let it bleed !

According to Billboard, the album was the #46 best seller of 1986. Every album over the #52 position in 1986 sold a million copies, so DW sold 1.1-1.2m only in 1986. Since 1991 the album sold another 70,000 copies and we can guess 50-100k more during 1987-1991.
The US sales of DW are 1.2-1.4 million copies.

ABB sold more worldwide (but only 200k more in US), if we compare the tours of both albums about 1/4 of the people that saw the Stones during 2005-2006 in US bought the album and 1/2 worldwide.

I don't think he was bitching about the sales; it was the album's lack of risk-taking that he regretted. I remember Mick specifically complaining that Was was "anti-groove" and that the Stones failed to make a "radical statement." That pretty much explains what was on Mick's brain going into the B2B sessions...

Good points Mel. Blouse, Voodoo Lounge sold a little more than 2X A Bigger Bang worldwide. 6M to 2.5M. In the U.S. it was something like 1.9-2m to 550K.
12th January 2008 07:40 AM
gotdablouse Can we leave the friggin' Who (or what's left of them out of ths topic ?!).

Yes, actually what Mick said in that interview was something like "if it had sold a ton maybe I would have a better opinion of it", which is not straight bitching about the sales, you're right.

Too bad he didn't keep the spirit of B2B on ABB. It's really hard to understand how seasoned musicians like them can come up with such a dull production. I've said about 50 times here, but the big difference is the musicianship too.

Let's face it the Stones are not the greatest players on earth (well maybe Keith was for a few years between 69 and 72, GS anyone ?) and while it's nice to see Mick play the guitar it's pretty pedestrian and certainly doesn't elevate the tracks. Same problem on VL and ABB, but B2B had wonderful musicians like Wachtel (SOM anyone ?), Benmont Tench(AOM is a superb production) and even Billy Preston.

Its the pic that Joe Pesci eloquently 'reviews' in "Goodfellas" - "one dog's lookin' one way and the other dog's lookin' the other way. the guy in the middle is sayin' 'what do ya want from me?'"
