Ken Kesey....By The Associated Press
EUGENE — Eugene officials are considering naming a new elementary school after writer and psychedelic drug pioneer Ken Kesey, a native of neighboring Springfield.
Along with the iconic 1960s figure, the school board's naming committees are considering 60 or so other possible names, including Mother Theresa and Ronald Reagan.
The board plans to open two new elementary schools next fall, replacing five smaller schools with more traditional names, including Washington and Family School.
The list of possible names also includes civil rights activist Rosa Parks and farm worker advocate Cesar Chavez; abstract nouns for lofty ideals such as Discovery, Freedom and Peace; and from the natural world, Two Rivers, Blue Heron, Amazon Creek and Coral Reef.
Eugene hasn't named a new school since 1968, when it named McCornack Elementary after the man who owned the land.

So, would their school mascot be a Merry Prankster? Or a drunken Indian? The possibilities are endless... |
