Topic: I'M A PUNK CELEBRITY...[Lydon has lost it!] Return to archive
01-20-04 08:03 AM
Zeeta What the fuck is he doing!?

I'M A PUNK CELEBRITY...

SEX PISTOL JOHN LYDON has been made the favourite to win this year’s reality TV show ’I’M A CELEBRITY…GET ME OUT OF HERE’.

The singer joins a cast in the Australian outback that includes the likes of Jordan, Peter Andre and footballer Neil Ruddock. The show starts next Monday (January 26) and is broadcast on ITV1.

Lydon is 3/1 favourite, according to Ladbrokes. A spokesperson said: "We can't split John Lydon and Neil Ruddock. Both are popular in their fields and are known for causing trouble. We expect Neil to use his razor sharp tongue and believe Lydon could have enough left in him to bring anarchy to the Australian jungle."

Zeeta Hey, did just write: PUNK IS ALIVE?!?!?!?!?

No you bell end!

The article is about Lydon whom I thought was fairly cool, joining a publicity seeking shitty gameshow.

Mr T why do people care anything about that guy

glencar The American version of this show was a horror. J-Lo's ex-husband won it by beating out Joan Rivers's daughter. It's all relative.

actually its not quite dead yet. did you know that the dead kennedys recently brought on a lead singer young enough to be their grandson?

punk is alive and well in its own little subculture niche.

Zeeta I;m not fucking going to JUSTIFY the relevance of punk and The Sex Pistols?!

For christ's sake!

It is beyond belief

Honky Tonk Man Yes Zeeta, I read this in yesterday's Sun newspaper. I must admit, I'm not at all surprised Lydon is doing this. I don't think he has any real credibility now. He is just a parody of his former self. My brother has a load of skateboarding videos; he's even on one of them!

I didn't bother to watch the last two series of this show, like you I'm sure, I thought it was utter shite. However, with Johnny Rotten and 2 of the UK's largest sets of breasts taken part, I may just have a look. Jordan is so THICK it's hilarious!

corgi37 How odd that both U.K. versions of this show were filmed here in Oz, but we didnt get to see them. I think Nell McANdrew won the 1st one. She is sooooo hot. I guess as most of the "celebs" are unknown here is why it wasnt shown. Jordan should look a treat without makeup! And Peter Andre! Holy shit. He's been working at his parents resort in Queensland these past 5 years or so since his career went down the toilet. If any of you guys watch this show, keep us informed.

Punk was NEVER relevant for one simple reason. It was based upon nihilsm which eats itself the day it's born. Punk can NEVER be relevant by it's OWN definition. LOL.

bullshit. punk was extremely relevant and it still is.
i guess it also depends on what you define as "punk". some people think it is green mohawks and safety pins through their cheek. that's just a very played out image that any dumb kid can buy at the mall.

punk is whatever you want it to be. i think it has more to do with a Do It Yourself mentality. whether musically or artistically or both. no rules, make any kind of music you want, however you want.
whatever, i'm not gonna write a fucking essay about punk. but it just bothers me sometimes when people dismiss it as crap.alot of people like to bash it by saying it is easy to play and therefore it can't be good. guess what? a ton of stones songs are just as easy to play. look back at the early days of the stones. a group of middle class white kids in england trying to play the blues? i think that is very punk.

anyway, i'm rambling and i hate long posts. the point is, to say punk is dead or irrelevant is bullshit. have you ever heard of Fugazi? do you know anything about what they have done? i doubt it.

beer you're generalising all punk into one little category. taking a stereotypical view of it cuz your idea of punk is probably sid vicious. and since sid represents everything that is punk(to the clueless masses), it all must be self destructive, violent junkies with no talent.

Sir Stonesalot >but it just bothers me sometimes when people dismiss it as crap.<

But a lot of it WAS crap. Even the good bands produced some crap. But that's the nature of the genre. Some things work, some things don't.

However, beer does have a good point. Punk is dismissed by a lot of people who have a set idea about what punk is/was. They dismiss it out of hand because it doesn't fit into what they think "music" is. Or, like beer said, they think punk is Sid and Blink182. They look at it from a superficial point of view. And I can't blame them really. Somewhere along the way punk got hijacked into commercialism. I don't know where the mohawk thing came from, but once that image was turned into a uniform, things went down hill fast. Sadly, that's the image that became the stereotype. Shit, if that's the image of punk that I was presented with, I wouldn't have bothered either. Lucky for me, I know the difference between shit and shinola. Still, the people who dismiss punk out of hand make the mistake of thinking that anyone who was involved in the REAL punk movement gives a shit what they think.

Punk music changed my life. If it weren't for guys like Joe Strummer, John Lydon, Iggy, Dee Dee, Lemmy, Lux & Ivy...I'd still be listening to Kiss and Queen. Possibly even Aerosmith, or(gulp), Peter Frampton(the REAL antichrist). Icky-poo.

Now, on to Mr. Lydon.

Look before you leap to judgement. John could very easily wreck the show, cause complete chaos, ruin everything. Have you ever seen him on TV? VH1 let him do the red carpet show before the Grammy Awards one year. It was insane! I was laughing so hard years were coming out of my head in rivers. Seen any of the Rotten TV episodes? Whomever signed John up for this is either an idiot, or a genius...maybe both. I'm betting John is gonna use the show as a platform to blast the war, the record industry, anything that's pissing him off. He will be an obnoxious, arrogant, uncooperative prick. Should make for some interesting TV.

I'd actually like to see this show. And what could be more punk than John Lydon on reality TV! I mean, it's so fucked up! Brilliant.

Jaxx....There can only ever be one front man for the DKs, and that's Jello Biafra. Jello said no to a reunion because he saw it for what it was for...a lame money grab. Besides, isn't Jello trying to get the Green Party to nominate him for President? Now THAT is punk! East Bay Ray and the other guys can trot out whomever they like...but it won't be the DKs to me.

gypsy It's posts like that one above that make me smitten with you, SS.

Jaxx SS: There can only ever be one front man for the DKs, and that's Jello Biafra. Jello said no to a reunion because he saw it for what it was for...a lame money grab.

yes, loosing the front guy does take the wind out of their sails. however, they wouldn't be the first band to embellish their retirement accounts. all these reunion tour, regardless of genre are proof of that. however, you can't rob these guys their rights to be musicians. this is who they are and what they do, even if they do morph into something unrecognizable.

i think that punk was to the late seventies/early eighties what the stones were to the sixties. the antithesis of mass culture and a place for the renegades to hang. punk rock has always been angry and apolitical. even the love songs are angry.

that could be said about pretty much any genre. back then and today.for every killer song that Hall and Oates wrote, they had one or two that weren't quite up to their high standards of kick ass heavy metal. but motels said punk was never relevant and could never be relevant. to me, that pretty much sounds like dismissing it ALL as crap.
01-22-04 02:33 AM
glencar Is there any truth to the rumor that Johnny Rotten was actually conservative?
01-22-04 08:03 PM
Sir Stonesalot Jaxxy...I have zero qualms about the Jelloless DKs doing a tour. Good for them, I hope it makes them boatloads. Jello is a different breed of cat though. Where Johnny Rotten will come right out and say, "We're doing this tour to make $$$, buy 10 tickets.", Jello has always looked at wealth with distrust and hostility. To him what East Bay Ray is doing is anathema to what the DKs were all about, where as Johnny has always wanted to get paid and paid very well.

Actually, I'm glad you brought this up. It gets me to another point I'd like to make.

The DKs, Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Damned, X...they never got rich from their music. The record companies and agents and managers...they all made truckloads. What passes for punk today makes Fort Knox type money for bands like Green Day and Blink182. I can't blame Johnny Rotten for wanting to cash in now. Why the hell should Billie Joe Armstrong make mad cash offa Johnny's trick, and Johnny gotta scrape around trying to get enough cash to fund his next project. Johnny, East Bay Ray, Dave Vanian, John Doe...they all deserve a payday. So does Jello, but he'd never admit it.

And Gypsy...I've been smitten with you ever since the day you sent me naked pics.

Zeeta This is the sort of discussion I was aiming to enduce.

I suppose Lydon never gave a fuck and doing this is exactly that, he KNOWS that his fans and general opinion will be he is selling out going on the show but he doesn't care. It will be very interesting to see - will he win? Will he play along for popularity? (doubtful) Will he just go mental and tell everyone to fuck off?!
Will be fascinating to see IMO. Oh, and so will Jordan's tits!

Phog I bet this show will be quite funny. Too bad US television won't be showing it.
