We flew to Omaha, Nebraska with Andrew. A crowd of about 200 fans greeted us and police escorted us to the press conference. Keith said: 'We really felt like a sore pimple in Omaha.' We did a local TV show before our concert at the Music Hall in the City Auditorium.
There we ran into problems: these were the days of Scotch and Coke as the pop stars' favorite drink. A cop who looked in the dressing-room and saw a whisky bottle made us pour it, together with all our other drinks, down a sink. We were livid. Keith said: 'The thing was, i was only drinking Coca-Cola. I refused to pour mine away thinking, why the fuck was an American cop telling me to pour the national drink down the bog? The cop pulled a gun on me. A very strange scene, a cop ordering me at gunpoint to pour a Coke down the john.'
We played to about 1,500 fans, who gave us quite a good reception. Robert McMorris of the Omaha World Herald said: 'When the Rolling Stones cut loose at their show, many of the audience lost their inhibitions. The sparse but vocal audience was composed mainly of teenage girls who turned into a screaming, jumping mob as they clamoured for a closer look at their idols. To us older folks the first Rolling Stone who poked his shaggy head through the curtain was a sight that belonged to a science-fiction movie. The guitar player came out in a kind of crouch. He maintained this stance throughout the concert. He stared at the crowd with furtive, almost hostile eyes. Was this the creature from the black lagoon? He was followed on stage by four seedy, unlikely-looking heroes and the screaming soared to new heights of delirium.'

"The only thing that went down heavy there was a cop scene. It was then I realized what Lenny Bruce was talking about. We were sitting back in the dressing room. First time in Omaha in '64. Drinkin' wiskey and Coke out of cups, paper cups, just waiting to go on. Cops walked in. "What's that?" 'Whiskey.' 'You can't drink whiskey in a public place.' I happened to be drinking just Coke actually. "Tip it down the bog'. I said, 'No man, I've got Coca-Cola.'

'I look up and I've got a .44 lookin' at me, right between the eyes. Here's a cop, tellin' me to tip Coca-Cola down the bog. Wouldn't be there if it wasn't for Coca-Cola. But that's when I realized what it could get into."

Later that night (Omaha) the Hollywood Palace Show we had recorded with Dean Martin was on TV and we were furious at the way they had portrayed us. Mick immediately got on the phone to London, and screamed at Eric for booking our appearance. As we became popular in American, they re-ran the complete spot many times, substituting comperes who said more favourable things about us. In truth, we had the last laugh. On a later US tour, Brian had an affair with one of Dean Martin's daughters.

KEITH: "Nebraska. We really felt like a sore pimple in Omaha. On top of that, the first time we arrived there, the only people to meet us off the plane were twelve motorcycle cops who insisted on doing this motorcade thing right through town. And nobody in Omaha had ever heard of us. We thought, 'Wow, we've made it. We must be heavy.' And we get to the auditorium and there's 600 people there in a 15,000-seat hall. But we had a good time.

"That's what stopped us from turning into pop stars then, we were always having those continual complete sombody hittin' you in the face, 'Don't forget, boy.' Then we really had to work America and it really got the band together. We'd fallen off in playing in England 'cause nobody was listening, we'd do four numbers and be gone. Don't blink, you'll miss us.
"Some towns you went into on the first tour they'd look at you with a look that could kill. You could just tell they wanted to beat the shit out you."

BILL: "We were always amazed that people hated us. I think they never realized that while they were afraid of us, we were just as afraid of them."

CHARLIE: America was a joke when we arrived, but by the time we left we had an audience and by the time we came back we had made a hit record there. It was uphill, but the audience grew every time.
When I first went there I wanted to go to New York and Birdland and that was it. I didn't care about the rest of America. New York was the home of what I dreamed I wanted to be, which was a black drummer playing in 52nd Street. Of course, I'm not black and the scene had gone by the time I got there, but New York was still a very hip jazz centre. One the first bands I saw when I got to New York was Charlie Mingus's, with Danny Richmond on drums, and Sonny Rollins had just come out of hibernation and had his trio. Those were the days when Sonny used to start playing in the dressing room and then play to the walls all round the stage. It was fantastic.
I thought every jazz musician I liked came from New York, but of course they didn't, and then I came to Los Angeles later and I liked LA too-we used to practically live there at one time in the 60's; we'd be recording or something for three months of the year. I do remember San Antonio, because we met Bobby Keys and the Beach Boys at the State Fair show there. Then I went to Chicago and fell in love with Chicago as well.
And we did some recording at Chess. Everyone the band loved had recorded there. Thank God we did go there, because we got a great engineer called Ron Malo. Keith still plays a Chuck Berry record every night in the dressing room. It's not something he does religiously, it just happens there are five records there and one of the best is a collection of Chuck Berry songs. I listen to it and still think, "Bloody hell".
When we went there Marshall Chess took us to see where they had the racks with all the albums they produced. I was interested in the jazz stuff-all the Argo label material-people like Al Grey and Ahmed Jamel. In those days there were some great jazz clubs in Chicago-the Persian Room and the Alhambra-and some great players.
I met a young drummer there called Maurice White, who was playing with an organ player and an albino guitar player, called Speckled Red, or one of those sort of names. I remember them being in this tiny room and the fantastic sound coming out of it and the lovely little drum kit Maurice was playing. It was a thrill meeting people like Muddy Waters, of course, but I was also looking for Vernell Fournier and Freddy Below-people like that.

Lil Brian Stones Wax 15 Sides At Chuck's Studio

What a fabulous day it was for us last Thursday in Chicago. It started off weirdly in the morning with a press conference. Nothing peculiar about that, perhaps -except this one was in the middle of the main street!
We got a big crowd, until we were moved on by the police with guns, so we didn't argue. Anyway, we hit all the papers and TV shows, so it worked.
That afternnon we paid our second visit to the Chess label's recording studios. We visited them the day before and cut four tracks, including our next single, 'It's All Over Now'. It was a big thrill for us to be recording in the same studio used by Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley.

What a funny country America is!
We had a whole day off in San Antonio, Texas. In the afternoon we went shopping downtown, and saw the Alamo. Things haven't changed much since the Alamo days, because there is a bit of feeling (to put it mildly) between the Texans and the Mexicans here.
This particular day 15 Mexicans were shot-so we didn't stay long!
Back in Chicago we also did a radio show and TV interview, but then went to bed. We were advised not to go down the South Side area of Chicago (where all the rhythm and blues clubs are), as there were bad scenes between the Negros and the whites. As I say, what a funny country this is!
We did a ballroom date in Minneapolis which was organised only two days before. Nobody had heard of us, and the reaction was complete disbelief and curiousity.
On our way to Omaha we stopped off at Sioux Falls and Sioux City, but didn't see any Sioux Indians. I think they've locked them up all by now!
We did a teenage TV show, and all the kids were doing similar dances to the English kids at home. Not like Texas, where they waltz and foxtrot to everything. As I say, it's a funny country.

Lil Brian Stones Cut New Single In Chicago

In the famous Chess recording studios in Chicago, I sat in the control box and watched The Rolling Stones cut a great new single for the British market.
It's called 'It's All Over Now'. And it goes like mad.
It should create a sensation in Britain, and if it is timed right, it should easily hit the Number One spot. And very quickly too.
The Stones are wildly enthusiastic about the Chess studio. So much so that they decided to cut an LP, and knocked off ten numbers in two days.
The general manager at Chess is Ron Malo, the man who worked on all the hits by stars such as Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters.
It was a gas for the Stones to see these famous names written on boxes of tapes in the studio, plus other stars like Howlin' Wolf, Memphis Slim and Little Walter.
The single session was bound to go well from the start. Bo Diddley phoned from New York to wish the boys well, Willie Dixon dropped by to see them and Muddy Waters arrived in time to help the boys carry their guitars upstairs.
After all this the session got underway -right into a verbal punch-up between co-manager Andrew Oldham, Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger about the intro.
Curses flew between them, thick and fruity. Outsiders grew concerned. Then it was suddenly settled with laughs all around.
Take after take came and went. Charlie Watts thrashed away on the drums. Keith bent double as he worked on his swinging guitar solo. And in the cubicle at the back Mick shouted and clapped his hands as he yelled out the vocal.
People from all over the building joined us, and in seconds everybody was moving. Mick and the boys were shaking and twisting.
Even the Stones themselves can't believe the sound they are getting. They are completely knocked out.
That day, Chuck Berry looked in to say, "Swing on gentlemen, you are sounding so well if I may say so."
After the playbacks I walked back into the studio and saw discarded guitars, empty cigarette cartons, overflowing ashtrays, jackets, half-eaten hamburgers and empty bottles.
Ron Malo followed my glance. "Your Stones are really tidy", he said. "You should see some of the messes we get here."
Thanks, Chicago, for two indelible memories. First, hearing the Stones called tidy. Second, the swinging, raving ball we had in Chess studios.

KEITH: Before we went to America it was difficult to record in England. Nobody could record or had recorded the sound we were tryin' to get. People weren't used to that kind of roughness. Everyone in England at the time was incapable: engineers, equipment, producers and to a certain extent musicians. No one could get a really good funky American sound which is what we were after. The best move we could possibly do was get to America as quickly as possible and record there. (Barbara Charone)

BILL: When we recorded at the Chess studious in Chicago, we had Ron, the guy who engineered all the Chuck Berry , Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf records. He knew exactly what we wanted and he got it almost instantly. (Go-Set, June 3, 1972)

Is he confusing '64 with '66? The Music Hall is quite small. It's still there, practically across the street from the Qwest Center.
