nankerphelge Yeah that's what some people refer to as "the market"

Supply and demand.

A core component of the notion of capitalism.

That bastion of knowledge that is Wikipedia probably has a blurb on the idea.

I ain't an economist or nuthin' but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Basic idea is that (1) people can own private property (what a neat idea), (2) other people can find value in that property and (3) the real key to the benefits program, those people can freely contract (without the government's help) to exchange things for that perceived value.

Easy big guy.
No heavy machinery after that!

Tomorrow we can discuss bigger things like speculation in the futures market.

Lets rest for tonight...

Wow. The invisible hand. Sounds great. And without the government's help, too? So these free exchanges won't be conducted by means of government-built highways? And if one party decides to defraud the other, the victim won't have access to government-run courts to obtain redress? And if a miscreant third party decides to pull a gun on our free exchangers and rip them both off, no governmental police officer or prosecutor will be there to help? And this free exchange will occur in a free-fire zone without government troops to defend against "all enemies, foreign and domestic"? Man, that's what I call freedom!

Ya see here people...this is a shining example of an elitist...Ol' BJ here can't even reconcile his own sarcasm with reality...Yeah...roads, troops, police????...you mean those institutions paid for and flourishing because of free market money?...Seriously...dude's gonna raise a point in favor of "government" by citing the most obvious examples of taxation...those institutions and amenities approved of by the very people who are paying for them...why don't you cite the litany of government institutions paid for by this free market that are not of the will of the PEOPLE...start with your own job

You're not fooling me. You're just pretending to be clueless. You know as well as I that my job is enshrined in the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

I don't see where the 6th amendment says I, or anyone else, has to pay for crappy lawyers to defend accused criminals...that amendment says no such thing...but a group of "compassionate" elitists did get together and said that it does (Powell v. Alabama; Johnson v. Zerbst)...It seems to me...I say it seems to me, that such a task could be handled for free, by "compassionate" people like yourself...that's right BJ...that superior "compassion" of yours that you spoke of the other day sure does come at a hefty price...I'll be frank with you...I'm tired of paying big money to "compassionate" types like yourself...I've defended over 30 indigents in the last 5 years...and didn't receive a single dime for doing it...10 of those I got jobs and 9 of them still have them...I'd say this country needs my kinda "compassion" more than it needs yours

Brainbell Jangler First, not all of my cases are court-appointed. Second, the indigent rate (about one-quarter of my private rate) is quasi-pro bono. Third, I am disturbed by your apparent desire to overturn Gideon. Finally, I am concerned for those 30 poor defendants who were represented by a non-specialist in criminal law. Hopefully these were minor misdemeanor cases without any complicated suppression issues.

A non-specialist in criminal law?...don't fool yourself Lil' Cochran, you know as well as I do that the majority of PDs are bottom feeders whose only "specialty" is taking advantage of over-worked and understaffed prosecutors (See, e.g., lotsajizz).....and that they try cases from day one with little or no experience...you jump and holler and scream about that in the courthouse?...as compassionate as you are, I can't understand why you're charging any one for defense...I'm sure your nobility and compassion require you to cap your profits at the same level as your living expenses...I can't imagine that you, the self proclaimed Mother Teresa, take a dime more than you need...and sharing the unfounded concern you have for me, I'm concerned that you may be communicating with me here via a medium that you wrote off on your taxes as a business expense...Can you affirm for me that you're not using my 6th amendment contributions to pimp Obama and to tell everyone here how much smarter you are than the rest of us...???

D-list

Brainbell Jangler 1. I keep my business and personal expenses separate. It's the law.
2. Compassion is not coterminous with poverty. I've got kids to raise and student loans to repay. I'm entitled to make a living.
3. Your description of the dismal state of indigent defense is no doubt true in many jurisdictions, but not in Oregon. We have a strict set of standards for appointed counsel. Many of our PDs are careerists with 20 or more years of experience who mentor younger lawyers. We also have one of the best, if not the best, criminal defense associations in the country, which publishes many useful practice manuals and holds regular training seminars. Despite the arrogant disdain of some "money lawyers," criminal defense--properly practiced--is as complex a specialty as nearly any in the law. Patent and admiralty may be tougher, but experience in those fields does not qualify one to try a major felony. This is as it should be; life and freedom are more precious than gold.

nankerphelge My post was merely pointing out to Bucky that private property rights allow one to lease their property for value. A notion that is often lost on libs with their disdain for all things private -- except of course the tax-payer funded President getting a blow job from one of his tax-payer funded subordinates in the tax-payer funded Oval Office on tax-payer funded time - which apparently is "a private matter" according to some of you pointed heads.

BJ's citation to tax-payer funded government involvment in matters peripheral to a private contract has nothing to do with the point I made, other than to underscore his need to pipe up at anything that undercuts his socialistic view of the world.

I have noting against criminal lawyers...nothing...I was just trying to prove a point with you...which is, I think you have completely lost sight of the notion that spending other people's tax money does not equal compassion...you've made several posts to me that cause me to think that just because you favor increased taxation in some instances and I don't makes you compassionate and me not...which is retarded...even by Harvard standards

nankerphelge "remember when the debt was shrinking?"

Yeah, right around the time ol' Bill and Al were holding their "peace dividend" chalk talk with charts and graphs of how their gutting of the defense budget was such a great idea.

Wonder if Bin Laden caught that dog and pony show...
