barking paul I was outside the Empire cinema in Leicester Square in 1974 awaiting the great man's arrival for the London premiere of the film 'The Greatest', on his arrival he climbed on top of his limo and joined a huge crowd chanting 'Ali..Ali' throwing punches into the air.

Love the guy....he IS the main man.

On my first ever trip to New York. October 1993. He was doing a book-signing in Brentano's on 5th Avenue with his personal photographer Howard Bingham.

Ali was my hero when I was a kid, so as you can imagine it was quite unbelievable to have something like that happen within a couple of days of arriving in the US for the first time.

I hear you there.

93' huh. He looked pretty good there. How was his speech at that point? Did he bring the charm? He was a hero of mine too. I can remember watching that 3rd Ali/Frazier fight with my grandpa. My GP was not a fan because of the Vietnam thing, but he could not deter me; I was in awe.

He was booked for an hour and arrived about 20 minutes late. There were absolutely hundreds waiting, the whole way around the bookstore, so not having been at one of these things before I was a bit concerned I wouldnt get my chance.

Finally, he arrived, the whole store burst into spontaneous applause and most of the people waiting in line broke out of where they were standing to run over to get close to him as he made his way through the store, shaking hands. Every so often, he's stop, give someone the 'stare out' and raise his fists and all that shit. It was great entertainment.

In the end he was still there about 2 and a half hours to three hours later, signing everything and posing for every photo that was asked of him - even for various pains in the ass for whom one or two wasnt enough. He saved his energy by not talking, although he was very lucid and extremely playful, hamming it up for the cameras, etc. Close-up he looked superb for a man in his 50's. His skin is flawless.

An incredible, emotional, never to be forgotten afternoon and one of those moments when you really feel like you're truly in the presence of greatness and a true icon. To say I was awestruck would be an understatement
