I am posting a sincere request that I hope some Stones fans will take seriously. Thirty-seven years ago, when Keith and Mick were convicted of drug possession, potentially putting an end to their careers (Keith was sentenced to a year in jail), Pete Townshend had the Who immediately go into the studio and record Under My Thumb and The Last Time as show of solidarity and support and took out ads in British papers declaring that until Keith and Mick were released, the Who would make sure that the Stones music would remain before the public. At Saturday night's concert, there is an opportunity for the Stones and their fans to finally repay Pete for his honorable act. The Stones ought to do something to express their support for Pete, but even if they don't I hope some of you will think about making signs or banners that say Support Pete or wear who buttons or t-shirts. He's earned that much.

I read a Pete quote where he said the Who recorded those Stones covers cuz their management told 'em to. He said he didn't give a damn about the Stones possible jail sentences. I can't recall his exact words but I'll look for them.
AND...I am a Who fan and I hope these charges end up false when the dust finally settles.

I'm a who nut too. And i dont think Pete is a child lover, but i think he did access the sites for pleasure. Went on the sites for "research" my ass. Well, i hope i am very wrong, but he's in a fucking deep hole here, and though i sort believe him, i'm going to wait and see. I'll make up my mind when he does a long, sit-down interview, puts his thoughts through and explains himself better. He said he uses "adult pornography for personal use" and this has me worried. Living in a $24,000,000 mansion, able to command just about any slut in the world to do any act he wants, and he prefers to jerk off to a computer screen? Sounds a bit fucking wacko to me. i don't care if someone uses drugs, that's his/her personal biz, and thus i would ALWAYS be against conviction.
i don't know wether or not pete's guilty.
if he is, he's a sicko and should be convicted.
if not, i feel really sorry for him; the fucking story is all over the news!

Who could not be a WHO fan? Their music is legendary.
This is like Pete Rose in baseball, you can't take away
what Pete did for the game, however, his outside of baseball life jaundiced his baseball career, to a point
where he can no longer step foot into any baseball park, ever work for baseball again. Certainly, this situation is far more serious than gambling on baseball, which could prove to be worse for Townsend, in the long run.
More needs to known about the entire situation, what the feds are claiming, how Pete responds, before judgement is passed. The Stones noting it at MSG? Not on your life, they will not touch this, to a crowd of millions, NEVER.
I would be shocked, they are not U2, using this as a vehicle
It's not about coming to Pete's defense, they do not want to get get drawn in to something that is not finite.
Right now, the dust is settling on the matter, let's see what happens.

It wasn't my intent to equate drug use and child pornography. But Pete hasn't been convicted of anything and IMHO his support of the stones in the past has earned him the benefit of the doubt on this. (And for what its worth, in 1967, drug use was a very serious offense -- compare Keith's one year sentence to Gary Glitter's four months for child porn). Put it another way, and I'm not trying to pick a fight, I doubt anyone on this message board burned their Bill Wyman era stones records when they found out that, at age 46, he was sleeping with a 13 year old. My point: don't rush to judgment. And support your friends. |

Don't matter what I think of Pete...I ain't the one handing out invitations to hell..and if you believe in the concept of hell (and I ain't saying you have to), you should know that that's exactly where Pete is going...Doesn't matter whether Pete is innocent of this or not, I'm not supporting him with respect to any crime of this nature...He's a sexual deviant and that's a fact!...child porn or no child porn...Thus, as far as Fiji is concerned, he'll get no support in his personal affairs...I've supported Pete plenty at the record store...

Corgi and anyone else who thinks this swings on a legal verdict: it doesn't. What he already admitted to is a crime and its not an "intent" crime, meaning the law doesn't care why you did it. Pete will get charged and plead guilty to this eventually. The issue for fans is whether he can convince us he isn't into that stuff. I still don't think he is based on what I've read.
Pants, everyone wants a statement from him, but his lawyers have told him that if he opens his mouth, they will hit the road.
Maxy, you're right The Petey shouldn't be compared to Wyman. At least not yet. There is no evidence that The Petey has raped any 13 year old girls.
